I know this thread is very old, but I thought I'd share in case anyone wants to try this. Recently I started cooking vegan meals for my son and we created a yummy treat to make with soft tofu. We call them tofu "poppers."

Most recipes for soft and silken tofu are for sauces, soups, smoothies and such. We do make those, but the kids really like the poppers. Since they are fried, we joke that it's a way to turn a healthy food into an unhealthy one, but we only make it as a treat every once in a while. I don't have a recipe, just made it up.

- Don't press the tofu. Just drain it and let it sit on paper towels for a while

- Heat some vegetable oil in a wide skillet with high sides (I put about 3/4 to an inch of oil)

- Sprinkle the tofu with salt and pepper

- If there are other spices you like, sprinkle those also, such as cumin & chili powder, an Italian blend, etc,

- Put some flour in a pie pan or shallow dish to coat the tofu

- Using a spoon, scoop "nugget" sized scoops of the soft tofu and place them in the flour. Gently roll them around to coat. Sprinkle a little more salt and pepper as desired.

- Fry the tofu pieces in the oil, gently turning them until they become golden brown. Drain them on paper towel.

We like to make Asian stir fry, and these poppers are a great addition. After you have the Asian stir fry all ready, plate the meals and add the poppers to each person's plate. Drizzle a little of the stir fry sauce over the poppers. Yum.

I think the reason it works is that the outside is crispy but the inside stays soft. If you try this with hard tofu, the whole thing gets hard and dry.
