I know we've talked this into the ground. I'm convinced any cheap sand will work. At the level we talk about it I think we're putting lipstick on a pig. I used generic clay kitty litter, same as used in garages to sop up oil spills, to level a spot in my yard in San Antonio. It worked perfectly. In the back yard I used sugar sand mixed with compost. That worked well, too. If money was no object I would use a sharp sand like they use for sand blasting rust off of bridges or ships.

The idea with leveling is to use as little sand as possible to fill the holes only. If you have larger low spots, then you will need more. Hopefully you don't. But the key to minimizing the leveling sand is to scalp the grass as low as you can. Bermuda will come back. Other grasses may have more trouble returning. If you could level bare soil that would be ideal. Leveling over top of 5 inch high grass would be a nightmare.

Just don't use beach sand, the round grains will never set to a firm surface. Pretty much any all purpose clean sand is good

The first guy who started this leveling topic ordered several pallets of bagged sand (80-pound bags). He got it bagged so he could return the unused bags.

Unfortunately the 1000 lb bag from Lowe's is not even half a yard of sand so that is way more expensive then what I can get it for. Right now I can get it for $40 a ton delivered

If you are leveling that much you may want to consider mixing in some potting/top soil.. I don't know the cost but may help you save some money..

You could use topsoil instead of sand if you could crush all the clods that come with top soil. Even a 1/2-inch clod will create a furrow that you want to go away.

I'll just quit being cheap and buy the sand. Hopefully 1 truck load will be enough
