Extend fireplace mantel?

So it's weird that I have a door right next to my fireplace but I can't move it.... However my husband built the mantel and I wanted to extend it up on the wall to the crown moulding. ( see picture with Windows on either side) but I'm not sure it would look good next to the door. Thoughts?

Hello there,

On first glance, it would likely be just fine, but it could be a little crowded by the doorway for some tastes.

Our suggestion is to construct a "mock up" out of cardboard, set it on the existing mantle, and test the concept that way. You'll know right away whether you like the look or not.

Are trying to obtain the look of the picture below? My first thought is, the front trim under the mantle is too deep. If you were able to straighten the arch to a straight edge, the mantle shelf would look much grander.
