Just my opinion from personal experience...hire an architect for at least a consultation...our contractor, who was very experienced didn't realize that one partial wall was load bearing from what he could see up in the attic and it was...was a mess that I wouldn't wish on anyone!

I completely agree - an architect is an essential first step. After that, consulting with a designer and contractor will help give you a focus and an overall style for the kitchen.

I have not started this project yet... but I do have appointments with several professionals (designers, contractors). I guess that counts as "starting", right? However, it may be a while before we actually begin tearing down walls (like this Fall, maybe??), but I will try to remember to take pics as we go along!
