How often do you repaint your interior?

last modified: 9 years ago

My mother did it every 5-6 years even when she was an empty nester. Depending on the room, our paint is 10 yrs or less. However, it's just DH and I, we still like the colors and it still looks good (to us). So when do you know? When you tire of it? Or??? Is there actually a rule of thumb?

We only paint if we want to change the color or it needs to be painted. With only the two of us, more often it is because I want to change the color LOL.

    Ditto what tinam61 said.

Very rarely - we lived in our last house 23 years and painted twice. Our second home 16 years and we painted once.

A good paint job should last for decades. Your taste may or may not last that long.

I paint when I want to change the color. And that doesn't happen often. I'm pondering changes to a couple of rooms now though.

Does anyone still wash the walls during spring cleaning. I remember helping my mother with that chore when I was young.

I usually paint with a satin paint so that I can wipe walls down if necessary. I repainted my kitchen the same color, after 15 years. It just looked like it needed touched up, but the full repaint really freshened it a little.

About every 5 years to change color. I'm getting ready to try a few of the APC color choices for 2017.

I had a neighbor who painted every five years. They painted the exact same color every time. Retired couple with no grandchildren and a pug. I imagine their walls stayed pristine from one painting to the next. I found it baffling.

I love spotless walls and also flat paint. I paint when it needs it and usually the same color although I have changed some.

Rosestink! I haven't seen you post in a long time! What a nice surprise!

MagdalenaLee - That's exactly what my mother did! Until this last time, when she finally went with a pretty gray. Something entirely opposite to the antique white she always used. What a difference some color can make!

    I am hoping never.

My parents lived in the same house for 45+years and the interior was painted maybe three times, with one shift in a couple colors in the 1980s. Mostly things were painted the same colors for the entire 45 years. There was a lot of wallpaper, one changeover for most of the house in 45 years. The painter came more frequently to touch up the exterior woodwork all of which was the same color for 45 years.

In contrast to what you normally see, when the painter came he was there for a couple of months, lightly sanding all the woodwork and sanding in between coats on the trim. The trim in most of the house looked brand new and was satin smooth with no brush marks or drips after 45 years. He was old and inexpensive at an hourly rate, but being there for at least a month at a time added up. I won't be able to afford something like this.

A major pet peeve when looking at real estate is trim that is banged up and dented with a new coat of paint that covers obvious flaws , dirt, dust and hair. I owned a house that had been painted this way and there was paint right over obvious scotch and masking tape, and in the eating area, pieces of spaghetti.

In both of the last two houses it was cheaper and easier to tear out most of the woodwork and replace it, than it was to try and rectify a couple lousy paint jobs

We have been in our current house for 10 years and most of the paint needs to be re-done. Part of this is because I prefer matte but really, an egg-shell at least in the hallways would have worked better with our 4 kids. Our dining room is painted a deep red. Just looking at it, it seems fine but when we had to touch up a somewhat large area we could see how much the color had faded/dulled over time. Most people would not pick up on it but I do.

We do not wash the walls with my spring cleaning but I do need to dust them, which is another reason why I detest knock-down texture.

We've been here over ten years and haven't repainted. I also don't spring clean or wash walls because I can't. We do the minimum and as long as the house is tidy, which it always is, people think it's spotless. I wouldn't mind repainting the terracotta red dining room and soft green entry room but it all seems like too much work, and I frankly don't know what colors I'd choose instead. There are some real color experts here but I'm not one of them.

I don't think I have ever had a room painted because it "needed" painting -- always because I "needed" a new color. Ha ha. Some of the rooms in my house have been painted about every 5-6 years. Others have gone longer. Actually, we just had our main (kids') bath painted because it actually needed to be done. Bathroom paint seems to get the most wear and tear in our house. I don't think we'll have any more painting done in this house because it's all been done within the last 5 years or so, and I don't think we'll be here more than 2-3 more years.
