Personally, I really like it when the island is a different color than the surrounding counter tops. As far as granite colors...what other colors are you wanting to pull into the room? Or are you looking for a granite with similar tones but more movement?

You have a lot of hard straight edges. To help coordinate with your salmon floor, consider butcher block on your island, in a light tone. Or if you want a hard surface, go to the lightest beige in your existing granite to help tie everything together.

Thank you Cinar and Barbara. If I keep existing countertop, which already has a lot going on in the pattern, then shouldn't I go for solid (or very, very little movement) for the island? I had been thinking white for the island but am not sure if that would be too much white for kitchen.

I had briefly considered wood but I don't want to deal with the maintenance.

Do you think a very light beige stone would look better than white? I have no choice regarding the floor, it's staying.

I'm not a designer, but I wouldn't add another color. You already have a lot between the countertops, 2 cabinet colors and floor. I would replace both island and perimeter countertop to the same material.

I don't know what your cabinets looked like before, but they look great now! I do tend to agree with vbilenker, however. Is changing the perimeter tops a possibility?

I think a cream or white solid for the island would look really nice...as for the blue island you might consider adding more of the blue in the room so the blue can relate to something instead of standing all alone.

maybe the pendant light could have a blue globe on it and added hand towels in blues or a fruit bowl in a pretty blue or even a kitchen aid mixer? if blue is your accent color you need more of it!

I think what is throwing me is the salmon floors. I like the idea of somehow incorporating that not the top of your island surface. I'm not sure I'd want to replace all that granite - you have a lot of it. I'd put a classic white granite/marble with bluish gray veining on your island. Or consider a stainless top on your island. Not sure if it's in your budget, cut consider taking out the granite lip along your side counters and adding a backsplash that leans a bit more towards the warm tones in your floor and existing granite. Personally I love kitchens that have an island that looks more like a piece of furniture rather than more of the same counters and cabinets.

If you like the current top for the outside, I don't see why you can't keep it for the island too.

As much as I don't want a wood top island, I can see how it might tie all the preexisting components together.

I think Barbara is correct - it is your salmon-coloured floor which needs to be considered. I have two patterned granite tops in my kitchen - looks good (at least to me). If you decide to change the island top, then consider bringing in the colour of the floor. A question - could the colour of the floor be enhanced in another area? I really think this is what is "jarring the eye" a wee bit. Otherwise, your kitchen looks really nice!

Before you decide, I'd like to see your kitchen accessorized. I am thinking clay pot with greenery, wooden cutting boards or bowls, maybe a few plates, butcher block knife holder, a tray with salt and pepper grinders, vinegars, and olive oil. If the floor color were sprinkled along the counter tops in accessories, I can imagine the harmony of it all. You can't pretend the salmon floor isn't there. Your accessories make it blend and look purposeful. By the way, my kitchen floor is Carriage Gold, cabinets are cream, island is dark wood, and the countertops are warm colored granite.

I agree with others that it's missing a cohesive direction. I could see the island painted white. Then a different material used on top. But if leaving the blue then a wood top on the island could be pretty. To me either the island paint needs to connect to existing perimeter cabinets or the countertop needs to connect to existing perimeter.

I am thinking of a soapstone gray color quartz ( pentalquartz grey savoie polished) for the perimeter countertops and then perhaps a white w/ subtle gray vein granite island top. I think the gray soapstone color makes a nice contrast with the salmon color floor. Looked at alot of photos today with "saltillo" tiles.

We want to keep the white cabinet color and the gray island cabinet( notblue as it looks in the photos).

Replace all the counters. I hate tile for counters. Something about working with chicken and grout lines freak me out.

The blue island and the floor are two additional colors to the kitchen that isn't relating to the perimeter cabinets and counter, For a more cohesive look - I agree to paint or stain the island a dark brown - that color is in the perimeter granite. Then go with a white quartz or soapstone . The white countertop marrys to the new color of the cabinets. (Choose a stone that doesn't have dramatic pattern and compete with the granite. ) I then agree with the previous comment from Curlycook to decorate using some butcher block , clay pottery etc to purposefully repeat the floor color - this will make it look cohesive.
