Reviving my lawn

I'm in zone 5a (Ontario, Canada). We had a "southern" summer last year. Temps hit upper 90s on many occasions.. Very dry too, even into the fall. As you can see the lawn is in rough shape. This pic was taken in the fall. Where should I start? I have never had to deal with lawn this bad. Top dress with good soil then re-seed then water like crap and hope for the best? Thanks in advance.

What does it look like now?

    ^^^ what he wrote.

Too-early fertilizing encourages early weeds and unless you follow it up with a second fertilization in late spring or early summer, damages the grass long term.

If you really have the "must apply fertilizer" cravings, divide the annual dose into quarters and give 1/4 of the amount every months.

Just treat it like you should have treated it all along and it will recover.

we have crabgrass here... maybe not as bad as south.. people "thatch" their lawns here in early spring to aerate and lift dead material out of the grass that has been embedded after long winter... I think Sept is a better tine ti reseed than b/c August tends to be pretty much just as warm as July... I will aim for early sept.. so can I use a fertilizer spreader to reseed?

and to j4c11, the grass doesn't look good now..

    Thanks!

A fertilizer spreader will work great for seeding.

splaker I live in ontario as well, and trust me mid to late august is the best time to seed your lawn here. You can still seed in september, but august is better. I know it's still hot in august but it is better to seed then than later. Just remember to keep the seeds well moist. That means watering 3 times a day. When the new grass is tall enough to need to be cut then start to scale back a bit on watering.

I did a full renovation on my lawn around 5 years ago and I used scotts sun/shade mix. The lawn looks good but if I could go back I'd of done a full kentucky bluegrass seeding, and bought the seeds from seedsuperstore.com. Having said that I don't think you are planning on a full renovation and the grass you have is probably p rye, KBG, fescue so you could use scotts sun/shade and it should mix well with your lawn. Or if you want you could buy the p rye, KBG, fescue mix from seedsuperstore.com as there seed is considered some of the best.
