I wish I had put the overhang at the end. We opted for more cabinet space, but we sit at the end anyway.

I have a setup similar to yours except that my oven is where your fridge is placed. My island is exactly 39 " from the end of the island to the cooktop underneath the cooktop I have pullout drawers for pots and pans and I have no problem accessing them. So I'm thinking you would be OK. If you still don't fill comfortable with having enough room by all means move the top of your granite over. I did the same with my kitchen island top.

That's a great question. A good kitchen designer will advise you not to overhang the fridge side. The minimum spacing is generally 36" between the island and the perimeter cabinets. I usually prefer larger spacing if there are more than 2 people in the household. There are 2 things to consider. First, when someone is sitting there the pathway will be blocked. Second, the cabinets and drawers are more difficult to access with an overhang. Have you tried placing a chair there and having someone use it to see how the spacing is?

I wouldn't put an overhang on the end, and definitely not on the refrigerator side. You will appreciate open space for moving around all the time, and how often do you really need 4 people to sit there?

Thx for your comments everyone. I think the pic is misleading. There is NO overhang in the refrigerator side. Is in the other side and maybe on the short side. See top view of plan.

I like the idea of having an overhang on the side away from the refrigerator and the side away from the kitchen. That would create enough seating for 3 or 4 people.

You may have already done this but I think you need to mock up both ways with cardboard or plywood and see. Include a fake fridge door and a fake counter and hopefully real bar stools. Remember, if the extra spot is not to be used every day but only in case of major party situation, someone could sit on a stool without an overhang.

It's just 3 if us. I was thinking my husband and son could sit in the long side and I could sit in the shorter side so I can see/talk to them easier rather than 3 in a row. Yeah, that's a good idea Pool habit. Thanks again everyone for helping me figure this out.

Go with the overhang...you will be happy you did :) I have a similar island and I have an 8 inch overhang on the short side. It's more comfortable sitting on the end instead of 3 in a row. My overhang is 8 inches and its fine but I wish I had done 10 inches.

What is your plan for support of the stone overhang? Steel? Brackets? Where is your required electrical outlet located? There are rules about access to that and overhangs.

No special support. 12" is the largest overhang you can have without a support. The overhang on the long side opposite the fridge is 12". If we go for the overhang on the short side I'd go with less, maybe 8". Outlets are supposed to be located on straight sides, not under overhangs. We will have 1 ir 2 outlets. We may end up with one under the smaller side overhang. The one across from the cooktop is ok as there is no overhang.

Yes to the overhang! We did a small overhang on both ends of our island and use all three sides every day!

The largest unsupported overhang allowed for 3cm granite is 10", not 12". With 2cm, it's 6". You will need support.
