They are willing to pay for another tree but I would still like to save this one and move it to another spot since the damaged part faces the street and doesn't look good. I have painted it with wound & pruning sealer to seal where the bark was stripped to keep insects out, this is what I was told at the local gardening center. Is there anything else I need to do?

It might help if the bark is put back and tied for at least 40 days

The painting is NOT a good idea!! Wound or pruning sealers cause more problems than they solve and are no long recommended by any qualified horticulturists.

And I'm not sure what bark there is that can be put back.........the bark looks completely scraped off one side. And even if in a solid piece, it will not help anything to put it back in place.

Move this tree to an out of the way area and give it any attention it needs - it will very likely survive, as I stated previously. Then replant that spot with the new tree.

Every year i do thousands of grafts, I have put back wrongly cut pieces of bark, and they heal just fine

No paint, only wrapping with a parafilm.

That is a large and long piece of bark that is misiing, so maybe it won`t work.

I am still positive if the bark was treated right away before drying out it had a chance of callousing nicely.

This is way beyond what bark removal any graft would cause. The tree will callus on its own with or without any bark.

Depends, in summer grafting with hardened scions I get about 90%

But this winter the snow and the low temperatures killed 20 % of the healed grafts.

Honestly, I'd replace with one of similar size and type (which is what they should be offering you).

I'd do what Gardengal recommends. Put that tree in the back and hope for the best. Plant the new tree they owe you wherever you want.
