Interim lamp problem, mixed metals

last modified: 9 years ago

Writing the subject line made me feel silly and insignificant, but I'm asking anyway.

Due to circumstances beyond my control... rather than wait until the larger back living room is remodeled, he has purchased the oversized Mission-style oak and leather recliner and matching end table that he wants.

They take up half of this room's width. The few mismatched hodge podge of other furnishings look even worse now.

I must have lamps. I don't won't to commit to the stained glass/bronze lamps he's eyeing until the back room is finished and the rest of the suite is purchased.

I also desperately want something to coordinate and fit in this current room.

The ceiling fan/light has a brushed nickel finish; the overhead lights by the door and over the tiny breakfast nook have coordinating white frosted glass and nickel arms. They will not be replaced.

In the basement I have two large 1980s brass lamps. I also have two black "wrought iron" lamps that have bases of twisted "stems" with small "leaves."

I had first picked smaller scale furniture for this room, but he nixed it.

I hate to purchase more lamps, not knowing what my final furniture choices may be.

I will have my smaller maple swivel glider chair, two matching chairs of some unknown style, and a smaller La-Z-Boy Pinnacle recliner. No room for a loveseat that I can see, or we may turn it into a dining room with a small sitting area.

What would you do (short of a fire bomb) for lamps in this situation? Three brushed nickel overhead fixtures mixed with a choice of larger brass or tall but delicate wrought-iron lamps?

Well since it is only a for now situation i do not think it really matters. Just do what fits for you and no one is going to bother about things matching.

You made me take a look around and I guess I better be buying some spray paint because I also have brushed nickle and brass within view of each other. Never even entered my mind they did not coordinate. BUT eventually the chandelier in the dinning room is going into storage. Joe loved it I never did. Then I will only have white ceiling fan all white no metal showing but the brass ball chains and the two hanging lamps with brass chains. HAS Then everything will match.

Ladies, you're so indulgent! Thank you!

I should have taken photos before posting but I just got so overwhelmed.

I snapped this one and will try to get more tomorrow.

I do like his man-cave furniture, just not now and not in this cramped and small living room.

I didn't want to trudge down into the dungeon so I set one of the iron lamps on his end table.

The paint is a sage green IRL with no blue tones, but you can see the shape of the lamp.

The wedge table is meant to fit between two chairs with the narrow end forward.

I have one edge flush with the wall and the wide end forward. This puts his recliner at a slight angle toward the TV. Doing this created about 8" more space in the width of the room.

In this house every inch counts!

The table is set for real life - magazines, a pot holder for his coffee cup, and tissues. No room for fru-fru here!

If you click on the photo it won't seem so compressed and wide.

oh, I like the lamp! very nice. yeah, it really doesn't matter especially if it's temp.

I don't get that involved with what's what anymore. like, if the lamp works (has a bulb, shade and good cord) then I'm ok with it!

I ordered a new fixture for my kitchen a few wks back. it wasn't my 1st option but that one I couldn't find online anymore. I figured I'd better just buy this one before it was no longer on line too. it was only 30.00 and is for over the sink. now if I can just get someone who can install it! it's something like brushed nickel too. I did get that just because the trim on the stove, sink and mw are in the chrome family. so is the light in the hallway off of it. but I put bronze in my bedroom and at the front doorway.

I also have some brass lamps and will put them where I need them down the road without concern for the metal color. most of those need rewired before I can use them. Again, I need someone to do that for me since my hands tend to shake if I try to do things like that. Any close, tight work like that is out for me anymore.

I really like that lamp, Caroline! It goes well with mission style furniture. I wouldn't worry either about matching things up just yet. It's a process and needs to percolate some before it all comes together!

I like the lamp, too. My style is mixed attic with a big dose of old crap that I like. If someone comes here and they don't like it, they don't have to come back. I have never cared what anyone thought of my decor.

    I like the lamp too.

I just bought a new quilt and had two throw pillows made. I had them made from the matching shams. No one will really see them, but sometimes we do things just for ourselves.

Even though this is temporary, I agree that you should try to coordinate a look that makes sense to you.

that's me too. somethings I like and some I don't. otherwise, it really doesn't matter that much to me. what I see 'decorators' do on the TV shows wouldn't be done here. I couldn't live with most of what I see on those shows.

I have a mish mash of styles of furniture - shaker, mid century modern, industrial Home Depot, second hand cottage, elderly IKEA, early hippie. That generally doesn't bother me. However I have been looking for a small dining table for years - so far when I find a reasonably priced one in ok shape I generally veto it because of the turned legs. I have nothing against turned legs but it is my sticking point. One style too many. Meanwhile I eat on the couch.

I can completely understand being uncomfortable with visual chaos and the difficulty of integrating one's vision with someone else's. Especially if their vision is summarily plopped on me. If it is temporary I would try to set up the most comfortable space possible and use whichever lamp works best for functionality.

Here's one of the other pair of lamps I have on hand. It was my FIL's; obviously he bought it in the '80s.

I know the shade is wrong; I'm hoping some of you creative people will point me to the correct size, shape, color, etc.

It is 30" tall to the top of the shade, which is attached by a harp.

I also have this one lamp. It's supposed to go in my "Lilac Vapor" sewing room if the remodeling ever goes forward and gets finished.

I think it's about 26" tall; it's in the original packaging downstairs. This photo was taken in my guest/sewing room when we lived on base.

I still have the old wash stand (?) bachelor's chest (?) in the sewing room here.

I like all of the lamps and your old pieces. Have you ever put MCM pieces in your house. In what year was it built?

Hi VL. The original front part of my house here was built before 1952. The original owners' grandson said 1948. There's an aerial photo in the city that is dated 1952. It shows the house before the late 1970s addition and the smaller garage - which is now my half the the expanded garage.
