Minimum sunlight requirements

I have a few spots in my yard that I'd like to add a plum, thing is they receive partial shade later in the afternoon. When they say a plum for instance requires 6-8 hours sunlight a day minimum, is that during the height of summer? these spots would be alright during may-aug during our long days but the shoulder seasons might get a little more shade, especially in sept when fruit might be ripening

Sounds like you should be fine considering the number of hours of sun they'd receive from May to August. As for after that, I'd say if your tree is in full sun up until 4 pm, such would be fine. I know folks that have tall spruce trees that cast shadow on their fruit trees in the later afternoon and the sweetness and quality of fruit is not hindered.
