Thank you Marlene, my seedlings seem to like coco peat very much, I have some in Brunings seedling mix and some in organic mix, but the healthier ones and bigger are in the pure coco peat.

Agartta, such nice looking seedlings and well on their way. I like the coconut coir/peat also and I think in Australia, especially through your hot summers. The Coco peat holds moisture for a longer period of time, does not stay saturated and keeps evenly moist.

You live in a wonderful climate to grow these all year round outside. Will get great growth on them. Wonderful of you to join in here.

Hi Rachel - thanks, nice to be here with this great people, all loving Adeniums. Yes the seedlings are doing fine in coco peat, they grow everyday, I will update with photos.

If anyone can advice what can I put on such young seedlings to deter pest, as I can see something is having a go at the leaves, looks like bites, maybe moths, have a look at the photos and let me know what I can put on them, Thank you all.

Hi Agartta, do you mean that it looks like some critter is nibbling at your leaves? It is hard to tell properly in the photo. Are they outside/yard or inside the house? When did you notice it - were they nibbled at night or daytime? Could it be birds, caterpillars or maybe even geckos??? If it's only happening at nighttime, then I would bring your seedlings inside at night until they are abit bigger. Just make sure to put them back outside in the morning. Rachel- it happens at night, I bring them inside at night, I did see a moth next to them once, something is nibbling at them.

Agartta, do you get geckos in WA. In Brisbane we get a lot of them & they love to eat moths. They could be snapping at the moths and getting a nibble of plant at the same time... Luckily we have screens on all our windows to keep the geckos outside :) What do you think, could that explain it?

Rachel - no geckos where I live, but seen alot of those 2 tone moths green and brown, I have to cover the seedlings at night from now on. I just found out Adenium obesum is permitten in WA if it has the right documentation with it including phytosanitary certificate, its classed as permitted s11, I don't need an import permit, yeepeee you beautyyy lolol, I should start looking for purple graft from Thailand :-)

Agartta, I think you're right, it's probably best to cover them at night for now. You could also try putting them in your bathroom at night & shutting the door to keep any moths or critters away. Then you probably wouldn't have to cover them.

As for importing to WA, I think you'll find that it is only seed that is allowed & not actual grafted plants. If that is the case, then I would recommend buying some purple seed from Mr KO. (Mr KO will provide the phytosanitary certificate you need.) His website is adenium.com.tw , click on his 2017 seed price list or Rinoa at orient-adenium.com She will also supply the phytosanitary certificate for you. (I hope these links work)

Both of these suppliers come highly recommended from all here on this forum. Many of us in Australia have grown beautiful plants from these sellers.

Just to say, moths can't eat leaves, they only have a threadlike proboscis that's capable of drinking fluids so it won't be any kind of moth like insect that's damaging them :-)

Thanks Gill, I will have to cover them at night, btw I have seen some UK Adenium seeds suppliers with awesome colour flowers.

Hi Agartta, with the seed that we have grown from Mr KO, we have had similarities to the mother plant. For instance one lot we bought was a yellow/with pink stripe double. Once flowered we got 2 full yellows/no stripe, 1 white/with pink stripe, 2 light yellow/with stripes and a a few other inbetweens. Most were doubles, one was a triple & we had a few singles. (No single pinks) That's from 1 packet of seed. We were very happy with the outcome.

Another packet was a double black/red. From that one we got varying shades of red/blacks, including one that is more of a dark purple/black. Many were doubles, 2 were triples & we had a few singles including a couple of single reds with black edge. Again we were very happy with this outcome, especially getting some triples from a double seed packet.

Hopefully this gives you an idea of what you could get from 1 packet of seed. Purples are harder to get, but what I would do, is to order 2 or 3 packets of different purples that you like to increase your chances. Hope this helps.

Hi Agartta, Your seedlings are looking good. I see the critters seem to have stopped nibbling on the leaves now. Are you giving them a little morning sun now? ... Keep up with what you're doing. :)

Just a thought - You should share what brand of coco peat you are using & where you bought it from, so that other newbies in Australia will know what to use? Always helpful if you post a photo of the product too.

Rachel - yes the critters stopped nibbling at my babies, I don't think they taste good. The baby Adeniums are outside during the day (not under direct sun) and the get artificial led light in the evening till late. They are 30 days old now.

For the Aussie growers, I use the coco coir peat for seeds from Bunnings, add water and use as a soiless mix, it has slow release fertilizer already mixed in.

I add water to it in a bucket make a nice soiless mix for the seddlings.

Baby Adeniums seem to like this medium, they very healthy with good growth.

Agartta, Yes, I think some filtered sunlight is good for them now. I think it's great that you added this info for newbies. Now they can see the results you are getting with this mix. Keep posting updates on your babies as they grow bigger. Rachel.
