HD sale on AE

I went to 2 HDs hoping to find something nice in the way of hoyas. In my area we just don't get any kind of selection of hoyas at HD. I thought (ha!) that it might be different this time. Nope. Each store had one carnosa. And in general not that many EA plants. What is with that? It is a sale.

The home depot 20 min away from my home had about 10 Dischidia gerrii! They were so beautiful but already had purchased one...they were even sticking them in bottom shelves as in to get them out of the way.

they didn't even have any dischidias. At HD they had a nice (albeit small) display near the checkout area.

Our home depots have a huge set up at the garden center. Lowe's has a small fancier area in their store.

is it dry there? with all your succulents I think they would like that.

We aren't that far from the gulf of Mexico so it is humid here which the hoyas love. Must be dry enough for my succulents :-/ ....all I know is that it's hard to keep a hairdo in tact down here. Expect to get frizzy lol

Here in CO I've found Lacunosa Splash, Carnosa, and always at least one Dischidia at HD and Lowes. Even found a Fishtail Hoya at Walmart a couple times, they usually only have carnosa though.

    Hey all,

I know there's a lot of confusion about Exotic Angel® Plants in stores. We don't sell these plants by variety to big box stores and mass merchandisers --- so when they order, we ship an assortment of the varieties that happen to be available at the time. If two different stores in your area order at the same time and ship together, they'll likely get a pretty similar mix. If two different stores in your area order a couple of weeks apart, they could have mixes that are very different from one another. This is the case no matter where you live -- from Canada to Florida.

Also, because these retailers don't want to mess around with different prices for different varieties, we have to sell all of our 3.8-inch wide pots at the same price, for example, no matter what varieties are in them. So in order to make sure we don't lose money and go out of business with Exotic Angel® Plants, we grow more of the plants that are fast/inexpensive for us to produce and fewer of the plants (like hoyas) that are much more expensive for us.

So what you find at your local store is really a matter of the luck of the draw --- and is completely independent of the store name or location.

well it may be luck of the draw but in my area we always get the short end of the stick. ;-(

Yes, it's like a treasure hunt looking for Hoyas and Dischidia. Your plants are so full and lush, the search is totally worth it. Make me appreciate them even more when they are not that easy to find.

Sorry to hear, Laura. Sounds like you need to get your local stores to order more often... Or get more of your local stores to carry Exotic Angel® Plants...

If there are particular varieties you just have to have, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

it's ok Justin. I do have other local hoya sources. AE plants would usually be an impulse buy. And they are really nice plants, very healthy. It was just that HD had that sale so I was looking.

Laura, you should check with Marco. He's in St. Pete, which I hear is close to Tampa, and he has a good source for Hoyas close by. He's sent me several of them, and they're always very well grown, good root systems, and they carry several of the less common species.

The box stores around here are hit or miss, too. Well, the ones I go to, anyway. There are others around in two neighboring counties that aren't too far away, but I don't go there often. My local Wal-Mart has had Hoyas over the years. I've seen the Fishtails, lacunosas, carnosas, Compactas, DS-70s/tsangiis, wayettis, and Dischidias there. Now at Lowe's and HD, I have seen more, especially Lowe's. I even found an australis sp. tenuipes there once (and picked it up, along with a nummularoides-both now deceased). The one plant I never have found from EA anywhere is String of Hearts, which I do long for,

    moonwolf_gw,

Unfortunately, our grower at Exotic Angel® Plants just confirmed for me that we're no longer doing string of hearts. I wish I could help connect you with one, but we don't have any and it doesn't look like we will anytime soon again.

BTW: Anytime there's a plant you all are really wanting, let me know. It's useful to be able to go to the growers and say that we have a lot of home gardeners actively asking for a particular plant; it makes it easier to lobby them to put it back into production, if possible.

Okay Justin - since you asked (lol)

Ive been looking for 'Ruby Sue or Royal Flush in the Raleigh area for a while now with no luck. I check Lowes and HD weekly and haven't seen any of these Lacunosa varieties in forever. Maybe you're no longer offering these?

Thanks so much Justin. We appreciate your assistance (or enabling) in our Hoya addictions! :-)

Royal flush is something else, just such a beautiful plant. I hope to see it again someday. I decided against it, regretted the decision and went back - both were gone!

Sorry to hear that, Justin! Thank you for the info!

Royal Flush is a wonderful cultivar! I think I found it once or twice locally. Or was it Ruby Sue? Either way, both are pretty plants, and I adore lacunosa, anyway.

Ah, I found Lacunosa ruby sue at Lowe's the other day and snapped it up.

    Monica:

Good news and bad. The bad news is that I can't direct either of these plants to your local store. But the good news is that we're growing both --- so you have a chance at finding them in a shipment at any of your local stores that stock Exotic Angel® Plants.

Hey Justin, what about some of the other Hoyas listed on EA's website like longfolia/shepherdii and multiflora? Has production ceased on Hoya australis, too? I found one at the Lowe's I frequent a few years ago and haven't seen once since.

Hey Brad! We go to the St Louis Botanical Gardens at least once a year, and I've seen string of hearts for sale in the gift shop lots of times! Next time we go I'll look for one if you want. They're usually pretty small, but pricey for their size, around 8$ each. I can pick one up and send it to you!

Marcy, thank you! No rush on it as we just got slammed with snow yesterday and the winds are just brutal today. If you're sure it isn't any trouble, send it along when it gets warmer :).

We won't be going until summer. Usually around my Birthday which is in June. I love an excuse to look for plants! I'll let you know ahead of time.

Thank you again, Marcy! Yes, keep me posted. June's definitely safe enough to do some plant swapping/gifting/trading. :)

    Will do!!

    Moonwolf Brad,

May I pls. ask what are you meaning by String of Hearts?

A type of Hoya (which sound I'm not recognizing, could be) or maybe Ceropegia woodii?

Karen, yes I am referring to Ceropegia woodii. I had cuttings sent to me some years ago by a fellow Hoya grower (whom I haven't seen post in a long, long time-quinnfyre), and they didn't take. I've been hunting for a rooted plant ever since.
