Kitchen Island - Toe Kick?!?

Hi, I'm wrapping up a kitchen remodel and interested to get some thoughts from folks about adding a toe kick to the back of the kitchen island. Can see from the pics below that both the sides and back of the island are currently flush with the floor. Would it look better to put a toe kick on the back side of the island? Seems the island looks a little too boxy/simple without something on the back side. The counters, once installed, will be white quartz and will overhang the island back by about a foot.

What looks off, and is an immediate emergency is the lack of support for your countertop. You MUST design in counter supports. Plywood is not support. It is a thickness compensator for using 2cm material. And the required electrical outlets are lacking as well. The island can just have simple modern base molding to match.

Can you have it match the other base cabinets? Is the island lower than counter height or is it all the same height? It is hard to tell in your picture.

If you can, I would put a toe kick on the oven side of the island and the sides of the island (to mirror what you have on the wall of base cabs) and leave the stool side of the island flush to the floor. Or go all the way around. Or just leave it. ;-)

I do think it will look less boxy when you get some stools and other stuff in there!

No, do not add a toe kick, leave as is.

Yes, everything is 36" counter height.

The front side of the island does have a toe kick...see pic below. I was initially thinking to add a similar 4" toe kick to the back side or just leave as is.

Ok, I get it! Do you have your stools yet? Put those in and see what you think.

It may just look boxy because the room is so empty. I would be inclined to leave it as is (flush to the floor on the stool side)

No stools yet...I'm bad with making decisions :)

Fair point...it may just look funny now without countertop, stools or any other furniture.

No toe kick on the back of the island where the overhang is. What kind of supports will you have for the overhang?

We are going to add metal flat bar supports every foot or so along the width of the island. The plywood will be routed so the supports will be flush and underneath the countertop. Hopefully this will be sufficient.

But what will the metal actually attach to? Just routed into plywood laying on top of cabinets is not sufficient, and Ikea isn't that friendly for any of this. How is the plywood attached to the cabinets? How is the island fastened to the subfloor? Did the interior receive reinforcement all the way down to the subfloor attachment? Where are the wires coming in to the cabinet?

Great questions. I'll have to check with my cabinet maker about the specific details of the countertop support. All of the electric is coming up from the subfloor and directly into the bottom of the island (along with plumbing, etc).

Hi dbrandes would love to see what you ended up doing re toe kicks on the stool side of the island! We are going through a similar decision now.

I'd love to see how this kitchen turned out in the end, @duc_748 - can you share an "after" photo? Thanks!

Love your cabinet choices! We have similar gloss white cabinets and you're making me wish we'd splurged for the built-in fridge because yours looks so great. If your budget allows, is there any way you could add a quartz waterfall panel to the island? That would make it really sleek.
