It's really cute, Stephen! Is it fragrant? I don't know Johnsonii but it is not H. Santiago. And it is none of the Sonatini varieties I know.

Anja, it is very fragrant and i would agree that it is probably Johnsonii or one very close to it. Ill post more when the others pop out. Thanks everyone for the help.

I bought several small Johnsonii bulbs last year... maybe they'll bloom this year and I can compare them to your photo! I didn't realize they were fragrant... now I have even more to look forward to!

I too just acquired one and I didn't realize either that they were fragrant!!

How are you growing yours? I have a bunch of them too (cool winter dry and in pots), but I read somewhere that they don't appreciate being grown indoors. I tried many times before to grow them outside, but our winters are just too dang cold and wet for their liking.

Well, mine is new. I had ordered 10 offsets on EBay from Eden's blooms for a friend across the pond as they wouldn't ship abroad and they gave an extra one which I kept. It was small but they had been freshly dug so the minute I planted it in one of my coffee cups, it went to town and sent up 3 long thin leaves. I have it in a north west window where it only gets a few hours of late day sun and it seems to like it so far. I don't quite dare to plant it outside and leave it, as in my climate we seem to be getting a Siberian Express for several days each winter now no matter how nice the winter has been.

I'm assuming that the variety I ended up with is the real deal but if not I'll live with it and.. I had no idea they were fragrant.

This is what I got and they looked just like the freshly dug bulbs in the listing.

I think they also sell larger bulbs and if I had been going to order one just for myself I would have bought a larger one but these were just fine.

There's some variation in these old varieties...but the coloring for the most part and the anthers are the same. The petal shape is varied...as are the white stripes. These grow wild in Texas....
