Front Door color?

Hi, we live in a white cape cod with a dark green roof and shutters. Our front door used to be the same dark green as shutters but just didn't stand out. Kind of disappeared into the green of the yard and surroundings. I then painted it a burgundy color and honestly, it still doesn't do anything for me. Very bland. Want to spruce up the look of the house so that it stands out when people drive by without it looking gaudy. Thinking about a classic red but worried it won't look right with green. The shingles are a hunter green w/some black in them and the shutters are a very dark green. Thoughts? Thanks!

What a beautiful home! I would have picked a burgundy for the door too. I think I'm hearing that you want it to POP verses BLEND. So if you want red, GO for it. If you hate it, I bet you have some of that burgundy left. It looks like you are found of red, white and blue, so that RED might just be perfect! If you have another color you like, for instance the accent color in your living room, that color might be a great choice for that front door. Good luck, and don't be afraid...it's just paint.

The color of the porch columns, skirting and steps aren't doing you any favors, I'm afraid, nor are the red mulch, the skimpy plantings and lack of walkway. Also, there's a better way to paint door units like yours with sidelights.

Wow Sammy, thanks for tearing my home completely apart. I'm not a fan of painting my porch floor or steps white. Would be very hard to keep clean looking. The lack of walkway is due to the fact that we have a wrap around porch and the sidewalk is from the driveway and side entry garage and the front walkway is merely for looks, not use. The skimpy plantings you are referring to were just planted as we had taken down a lot of overgrown bushes. I actually like my skimpy plantings versus overgrown bushes and I like my red mulch too. Was really just asking about the door color.

I think your house looks great! What I would consider is possibly going with a brighter red. My wife and I just updated the front of our house last summer. Our deck was the same colour as yours and we ended up painting it a dark slate colour. We then painted our door a red colour like yours but it's a little bit brighter and I think it pops out a little bit more than yours. I think due to the overhanging roof your door is in the shade so a brighter red might help to make it pop a bit more even when its in the shade. Anyway, I'm no expert, just trying to help :)

Thank you. I agree, I think the overhang of the roof definately makes it look darker than I would like. I originally liked the burgundy up close but from a distance it is very dark and bland. I'm definately leaning towards a brighter red. Thanks for your comment!

Hey Traci, I had to look through my wifes fb album but I just managed to find a picture of the front of our house. As you can see we also have a roof overhang which casts some shad on our door. But I do feel like ours looks a bit brighter than yours and I think if you were to go with a bright but still burgundy shade of red you would definitely see more of a pop. Best of luck with whatever you decide! :)

I think ours is just a tiny bit brighter so you could even go brighter than this.

Thanks Steve, I do like the brighter color for sure. Looks good!

Consider a bright royal blue for your door. It will compliment both the existing greens and the reds.

Ecvzs, I actually thought about yellow but just not a big fan of yellow so I'm not sure I could live with it. Thanks for your comment!

Now if only I could get my grass to look as good as yours! haha :) One thing at a time though.

Ecvzs, that really does look good! Thanks!

I would go for a bold blue. If you are drawn to red, try that first. Beautiful home!

Thank you! I like both of those but definately drawn to the red. I'm also going to paint the sidelights white this time as shown in the pics. Thanks so much for your comment.

CLC, do you know what paint color the red door is that you posted? Thanks.

I'm sorry, Traci, I don't know the color (and couldn't find it, either). But I bet some of the paint/color experts can look at it and give you some suggestions.
