Pruning Blue Potato Bush

I have a customer that has a Solanum Rantonnetii (Blue Potato Bush) and need some advise. Took this yard over from previous gardening service that did do correct pruning with a lot of the plants in the yard. I would like to thin out the shrub so it get more light and airflow and would also like to reduce the height by a few feet. Is it too late to do some hard pruning on this plant. I'm in San Mateo, CA.
