Hi Angel -- I've come across this in "Other" instead of "Design Dilemmas", which is probably why you haven't had any replies. My first reaction was that the lamps are not too small, but the mirror is probably too big. But to step back a moment from that, the runner isn't helping you get any kind of look. You have lovely-looking wood there, let it show. The lamps are super, but I think that style belongs in the bedroom -- especially the draped look of the lampshades.

I've just realised I'm saying everything's wrong, start again. I don't like it when people say that, so I think you might start again just with the mirror, horizontal and just six inches above the sideboard. Then it would be cool if you could take a wider photograph of that so that we can see how it works together with the scale of the wall as a whole. And then you can decide what else should go there, and if the mirror is in fact too big or not, and I'd happily participate in helping with those decisions if you like.

The mirror is too tall for the wall space above this cabinet. Lamps are nice, but too small for this cabinet or to use this way. Plus, yes they are more the scale for a bedroom and might be too small for most night stands as well. If you turn mirror horizontally it should be more narrow than cabinet by 3-4". It should hang so bottom of frame is about 5-6" above cabinet.

I did a little mock up for you to give you inspiration. I couldn't find your exact mirror, so this is just an "example". I also took the liberty of replacing your plain chandelier with something more fitting your fine furniture. Enjoy.

I believe you can turn your mirror horizontally and it will work. Then two tall buffet lamps with gold in their style and black shades for warm dramatic look. A nice flower arrangement in the center and that is all you need. You will notice the reflection of the new chandelier I hung over your table! lol (Sorry, I'm not talented enough to remove the blue padding or the two small boudoir lamps. :) Just to give you an idea of what you can do.

Thank you all! My husband & I decided to return the mirror because we agreed that it was too large to hang vertically and didn't "love" it horizontally. We were thinking that a round mirror might look better and add more interest. (??? Thoughts???) I also agreed with everyone about the lamps so we are starting over!! The hardware on the buffet is bronze so we are trying to find a champagne colored mirror to lighten up the space a little bit. I loved the drama of the lamps with the black shades but want to introduce more glam into the room and lighten up the space. The furniture is heavier and more on the masculine side and I tend to combine masculine with glam (sparkle/crystal/etc). I will try to post another picture of the entire room. If anyone has suggestions for a mirror and lamps, I'd love to hear. My entire family is coming to my house for dinner in mid-April and I was hoping to have the dining room done in time but sadly, things are not going well for me so far. Angel, consider an oval mirror. I could see one of those used vertically there.

If you want a different more glam look, here is an option. Find some art for over the buffet instead of a mirror. I have selected a few things, just to give you a different option. Here is a little mock up to help you visualize a different approach. Also, you don't have to match your hardware on that buffet at all.

Art with metallic touches for light reflective qualities, lamps that have reflective qualities, these have metallic shades and mirrored leaves on the lamp central posts. I put a gold long bowl with some different metallic balls. All these would give a "glam" look without being too crystal/specific. I also have a chandelier for this look. I couldn't post it on the mock up but here it is. This is a bad picture, but it is from shadesoflight.com Cascading Crystal Chandelier and it is a little more modern in look with the long curving candlesticks and some draping beaded looks, and a crystal round candle wax catcher designed in as well. This look would definitely lighten up your furniture, although your furniture looks very beautiful, I can understand wanting to change things up a bit. Enjoy!

Here is a mock up of what you could do with your dining room. A nice large art piece and I chose a flower piece with browns and aquas. Of course, art is very personal so you have to choose. But then I selected other pieces that work with the art. The chandelier has a big of brown and tans like the art, the other accessories accent with golds. The drapery is a light gray with some slight yellow. A soft addition that helps unit the wall color with the art and golds in the room.
