I think it might depend on your weather. If you have hot, humid summers a fan could be an important feature. Don't be tempted to add a light package to the fan. IMO that never works.

I would say chandelier. Depending on your region, a fan might only be useful a few months per year, during which standing fans might be of more cooling benefit anyway.

It was either this type of chandelier (a casual French country look), or the solid wood blade fan with no light as I would agree with Tootsie, I haven't seen any nice looking fan/light combos. I do have pot lights on the ceiling as well. Also, I hear that fans are also useful in winter to help circulate the warm air throughout.

We are in CT and went with a modern fan (with lighting, but don't really use the light):

Your fan looks like the one we are looking at (see our pic) except without the light. Is it by Monte Carlo Fans? even with just three blades does it cool the air/circulate the air well?

This one is a Minka Aire (would have to dig to find out the exact model name), and yeah, we like it enough to now have it in two rooms in the house (put it in our master bedroom, too, and that has normal height ceilings)... Our room has a massive window opposite the TV wall and two smaller windows on each of the side walls, so even on the hottest July days of last summer we were able to get some nice circulation going. Granted, there were a couple of days we missed air conditioning, but overall I think the fan does its job.

All depends on which way the room faces, if the windows are insulated, if you have sun control for the windows. I prefer the look of the chandelier, but fans are sometimes a must.

The new very large fans can be visually exciting.

I would love that fan but do you need the lighting in the space that a chandeleir would give. Also if you are concerned about the heat from all the windows I would suggest you get solar shades so you still can enjoy the view but block some of the heat
