Thanks for your advice. Would you anchor the main sitting area with a rug? Love the playing/puzzle table idea as well as and the removal of the "too high" mantle. The TV hook up is on the wall from which photo was taken so will need to face sitting area in that direction. I suppose too much space is a good thing!

Making the Family Room a Game Room can be a way to make this totally functional and have fun as well! He might consider making a pool table the center piece of the room and build around that. Here are some ideas:

Yes a rug would be a great way to anchor your TV/relaxing space ....a small table with four chairs would be really nice next to the wood burning stove..upholstered parson chairs would help bring softness to that area..what a wonderful space to have and enjoy!

To further complicate situation, this is the room on the other side of the wood stove wall. It is more formal. Again, mantle is set high. Dining room is to right with wet bar.

Its a lot of space, for first few years he will be furnishing with thrift store finds! It is an old Bucks County PA home.

He could maybe use the more formal area for a sitting room a couple club chairs with a cocktail table and floor lamp..maybe a bookcase.
