Your gardening climate is probably a lot like Albuquerque or Socorro NM, so look for garden guides for them.

With slight protection, I grew a ton of leafy green stuff all winter in Socorro.

I lived in Tempe a few years, then Salt Lake briefly and since mostly Nevada. I found the Sunset Western Garden Book to be the most informative. You've a Lowe's? Go there and pick up the Sunset book and try out the spring display of their patio furniture by plopping yourself down and browsing the book in the comfort of their store. Pay particular attention to their zones.

I live in Camp Verde if i can help just post what you would like to know. We have Fruit trees, veggie beds, bulbs, roses, poppies, zinnias, herbs and the list goes on. Prescott Valley or Mayer? I have been on this site a long time and there aren't to many people in this neck of the woods who participate here.

Try garlic, does great at 4500 feet. Plant in November. I also have success with leeks and onions over winter. I had grear luck with a yellow tomato someone gave me as Nebraska wedding. I'm not sure that's what it is, but I saved seeds last year and will see how they do this year. Squash are fantastic, both summer and winter. Chard did well for me too. Lettuce in spring and fall, try to winter over with heavy frost cloth.

thanks all. Biggest problem seeds to be wind . If I try starting anything in pots or trays I just can't keep them damp. tops blow away. I bought nice fabric row cover and it is torn to shreds. Don't think there is any fix for the wind problem

I resorted to starting everything inside in soil blocks, and used erosion control netting to keep my lawn seeds from blowing to El Paso.

In the windy areas of town, people hold the row covers down with criss-cross lacings or a fish net so they can't get flapping started.
