2017 fruit trees purchases

Hope to buy following fruit trees this coming May:

- Italian Prune Plum

- Lucious Pear

- Parker Pear

Anyone growing these on the Prairies? The kicker is... can't buy these trees locally so will be driving to Top Crop garden centre in Cranbrook to get them. Good reason for BC camping trip, right?

    Where do you live?

i have two Italian plum. I would not recommend them unless you have a long growing season. These are a true zone 5 tree but will survive in zone 4 . I got some nice quality fruit off them last year but they barely ripen in time and are not that hardy compared to mt royal and green gage

Thanks for the reply Matt. I live just east of Lethbridge so solid zone 4. Didn't realize that was a zone 5 tree so that would be too dicey I think. Since I have 2 Mt.Royal's already wanted to try something different in terms of plums - something self-fertile. Where are you at? AB as well?

Yeah agree with Matt, glad you found out on that Italian...even in the City of Edmonton at times I've seen it die back pretty good.

I'm not so far from Lethbridge so very similar climate to me minus the insane winds.

italian is readily available at Home Depot I've seen it almost every year you get a big 8-10ft tall tree for $29.99 they are amazing fast growers but die back . I found if you harden it off well it won't die back so much. But this effects flowers neither of my Italians have put on a show in spring yet maybe 100 flowers at the very most. In your area I'd highly recommend waneta

    Or mt royal

I bet greengauge will do well for you there also. You need to talk to Konrad to get the real greengauge though it's rare here

Yes I have 2 Mt. Royal plums (super happy with them!!). Wanted to try another variety as I have no success with my Pembina plum setting fruit. Flowers every year kinda the same time as the Nanking cherry but no fruit. Was planning to get rid of it this spring. Konrad suggested a Toka for cross-pollination but never seen that for sale here. Only reason I thought maybe the Italian prune plum is b/c there is a mature tree in Lethbridge which bears fruit yearly... will be on the lookout for a greengage...

How big or old is the Italian tree in Lethbridge . Mine has been in ground for 6 years. I've heard they are late maturing trees. Hopefully we get an increase in fruits this year. Do you have a photo of it ?

If you want plum and pear trees I suggest you look in T+T catalogue. They are stationed in Winnipeg. They may not be the varieties you want but their trees are grown and tested for the prairies. I live in zone 4 in northern Ontario and have always had success with their trees and seeds.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Will try get pic this summer of the Italian prune plum in Lethbridge. Will check out T & T catalogue too. BTW - local garden centre released their 2017 price list and they are carrying the Toka plum. Will that work for cross pollinating my pembina??

The more the better, ...the Ptitsin is another good one to have for pollination.

Last few years Canadian tire homedepot and Costco all carried toka . Ptitsen 5 you will get fruit from and it will pollinate well. Toka ripens very late but has very high quality small fruits.

My sister has an older Luscious pear tree growing near Magrath. It has done well but never produced for her as it's pollinator was destroyed by deer. Patten pear is suppose to be hardier than Parker. My Patten is just coming through it's 3rd winter and looks great so far. I am not far from Lethbridge.

Just bought another Mt. Royal plum tree - decided this would be best option for plums in the end. Still planning to buy the Lucious and Parker Pear trees though... am leaving the Pembina plum in the ground for now... hope it will give some fruit one if the years. The Lapins cherry I purchased last September for 75% off a CTire has overwintered and looks like it will be flowering later on this week. Wasn't sure how that tree would do... so happy it survived so far.
