Tool for stitching leather by hand

I love trying to do things on my own or Do It Yourself (DIY), as it's called.

Also, I was born in a 3rd world country and I can remember, as a boy, going to the local cobbler who worked outside, and giving him your shoe for repair. If your shoe needed stitching, he would stitch it with what looked like a big needle that had a handle.

In recent years I've had leather jackets and belts that needed repairs which I thought I could have done myself if I had the right tool.

Has anyone ever done hand stitching on leather? If so, what tool did you use? What thread did you use?

I've seen some products on eBay and Amazon but I'm curious as to whether someone on this forum has actually done leather stitching by hand. If so, do you have any recommendations or tips? Life has taught me that it's always better to check with people with actual experience in what you're trying to do. :)
