if it doesnt work .. next time ... just pull back the mulch.. and dump a mound of soil over it ...just to proper planting depth ...

and then replant when the soil warms in a month or so ...

i cont remember which system works better.. or if there is a difference .. its just an alternative ...

Good your Mouse Ears came back. The leaves look small. Did they keep making progress last year? I wonder if this sets them back at all.

DaF came in two sections so I planted them six inches apart. The left one heaved, right one stayed put. It should be interesting to see if there's any noticeable difference when they come up.

They are TINY but alive and well..I was impressed they survived..this pic was an early one..by fall they were a bit bigger but not as big as my others that haven't been split and replanted..makes sense that they're behind doesn't it?..funny how protective I was about these little things..something chewed on them and it made me so MAD..better for the plant that I leave the flawed leaves on so I did but every time that I looked at them ughhh..got mad again

Update: It turns out it is all right! Here's what the heaved one looks like today. Looks like it didn't miss a beat.

Here it is with the other piece that didn't heave. They are pretty close in size. So replanting it to the right depth before it was awake worked well.

I'd say that's the lesson learned about planting the smaller ones with tinier root systems first when planting in the fall. This one got TLC, but I have some struggling potted hostas in ICU that might need a toss on the driveway, lol.
