Double checked: lights are a foot above the plants. I can't get any closer because I have one of those "greenhouse" clear hoods over the tray.

Also, I added a third of the same bulbs I had sitting around.

Once your seeds have sprouted, you should take that plastic hood off of them so they don't cook! You definitely need to get the plants closer than a foot so they don't get scrawny.

I learned these things from reading here! Have had good success the last few years with the advice.

thanks for the reply. The hood I have has three vents (top and both ends) so that heat doesn't build up too high. They can be kept closed to start and opened by degrees.

Once they sprout and are growing, light is more important than heat. I probably have the same dome you do. I remove my pots as they sprout and only keep the ungerminated ones under the dome.

Thanks for the reply. Two more points:

-- I didn't plant them all at the same time: some seed rows were planted within the past week and haven't sprouted yet. Plus, it's a mix of different plants and I expect some to take longer than the others. Still remove the hood, with 2/3 of the seedlings sprouted?

-- any thoughts about the lights I'd linked to? I was debating supplementing with 1-2 CFLs.
