hardy Gladiolus

last modified: 9 years ago

I'm going to grow Gladiolus for this first time this year but I'm confused about what kind to get. I'm outside of Boston in zone 6b and everything I read says that the typical Gladiolus is winter hardy only to zone 7. I'm not sure I want to be digging in the fall and replanting in the spring. Yet several friends in the area, and another person in even colder 6a, tell me that they have tall glads -- which have to be the regular variety and not the shorter 20" and more winter-hardy Gladiolus nanus -- and they've never taken them in for the winter. What's the story here?

Update: I've found this article about the issue, but am curious to know of others' experience.
