Large dining table and kitchen island

Hi,

We are doing a full main floor renovation using an open concept design for the kitchen/dining and living area.We have 2 children ages 5 and 6, and we cook a lot, as well as entertain.

The problem is that there is not very much space, this is why we are thinking of having a big counter height dining table (8x4 ft) that serves as a dual purpose of a Kitchen island and dining table as one. We also want something unique than what we have seen out there, and for this Kitchen island/table to not look like part of the kitchen. To stand out.

We would highly appreciate advice or suggestions other than what we have.

We would like to seat people all around the table, reason why we never considered the waterfall kitchen island/dining table approach. .... So the question still remains, Should we go with a counter height table that can seat people all around it? ....should we just have a small island and a small dining table instead (I guess for reselling purposes)?....

I suggest that you ponder how you might seat 10 or so people for a holiday dinner or even a birthday party. Even though we have only two children, we frequently have 10 for holidays.

I'm not sure it can serve the purpose of being an island and a table at the same time. If counter height and used to prepare meals, it will be a mess that has to be cleaned well before you can eat at it. If not used for meal prep, it might just as well be a regular table height dining table.

There is no law that says you must have an island. If you are planning to sell in the next three years plan for resale, otherwise plan for the needs of your family now and in the future.

In the last rendering, I would rotate the table 90° and have it table height. Instead of a buffet or sideboard, have a rolling butcher block island that can be brought to the kitchen for prep of larger than average meals or left to the side for day-to-day use.

You could also experiment with L-shaped islands:

I would have a smaller island if necessary, though you may have the space for a bigger one, and an extendable dining table that extends to seat at least 10, but ordinarily seats 4-6 for every day. I don't like a counter height seating for family dinners and I also think there's an sue with cleaning up after food prep before anyone can sit.

Thank you everyone for your feedback!. I agree the counter-height table is not going to be the best solution here and a rolling butcher block is actually something that may help here (thx Lindsey).
