Hi Valerie, without being present and looking at the structure all I can say yes the tile can be removed and replaced with an updated style.

Yeah, that looks like original Craftsman to match the house, so if it can be salvaged, somebody would love to have it. But you don't have to love it -- just get new tile put on, and you can do just the front if you want. I sort of like the wrap-around mantel, but whatevs.

If the fireplace and tiles (and sconces, for that matter) are original to the home, they add value. So just be very careful in your redecorating. ;)

Whatever you decide on the tile, keep that mantel. It's totally in keeping with your window window casings. If this were mine, I might replace the tile with another craftsman style I liked better, and I'd look for a good woodworker to do built ins on both sides to house the TV it looks like you aim to put there.
