Miranda Lambert rose

I wandered through one of our local Walmarts today just to have a peek at what they had. They had some body bag bushes of the Miranda Lambert rose, a bright pink HT. Does anyone have this? Could you give us some opinions on it? I'm just curious.

YAY Tique!!! I'm so happy you found FC. She doesn't disappoint!!!

I saw that they have fragrant cloud at the Grange but they're asking $28 I was thinking that's kind of a lot of money for a bare root from weeks

    Karen,

Have you heard of or tried ‘Rose Rhapsody’? It’s a child of Fragrant Cloud reputedly to look and perform like a big raspberry-colored version of FC, fragrance included! The other parent is Ingrid Bergman...the kid does indeed look the parents, and you can especially see the metallic bluish cast that is a hallmark of FC. What an incredible rose it must be if it was fortunate enough to inherit the good traits of these two. One of the ladies here in Dallas who used to maintain a huge and wonderful rose garden grew it and said it was a standout among her 250 roses, and a great hot summer rose. This is now at the top of my list of roses to get, seems almost like getting FC in another color!

Sorry for the thread drift, but I never found any scent from Miranda Lambert, so I’m going with Rose Rhapsody

I recently bought Rose Rhapsody from Heirloom when it was on sale. I read such good reviews on it that I had to try it. With Fragrant Cloud as a parent, I am excited to see it bloom. Glad to hear its a hot weather rose because I have plenty of that in summer. FC is one of my favorites and this one may be too.

Wonderful Judith, I just ordered Rose Rhapsody from Heirloom, due to arrive in a few weeks. I’ve cleared a prime spot in my raised bed for her, she’ll be taking the place of the disappointing Parade Day. Hope it does great for both of us! I think our weather is quite similar, though your soil is probably easier to work with.

I wasnt too thrilled with Parade Day either - and a friend who got it said it would bloom mostly pink and wasnt a strong bush. If it croaks, I wont replace it. RR, still in its Heirloom 1 gallon pot, is really putting out new growth! Am bringing it in tonite as we are due to get down to 26 and dont want the new growth ruined. Will look forward to sharing photos with you

Oh Ben - you're killing me! I'm struggling through pruning 135 roses, have unknown number (birthday and xmas presents) coming (plus the 9 I ordered), and I need another one like a hole in the head!!! But - FC and Ingrid! OMG! I have Ingrid too, and she has the longest lasting, perfectly shaped blooms. A combination of the two, WITH the fragrance - I can't even imagine. Oh heck, what's one more. I never thought I'd see 200 coming, but I think I'm going to get there. Wow, pruning this year is a LOT of work.

This forum is why we are all rose addicts. One day I am done ordering, buying , and then someone , yes Ben, I am looking at you comes with pictures and reviews of a previously unheard if rose and darn it, now I must have it. Thanks Ben for your own special brand of enabling. I think you have shown us a must have rose.

Muahahaha....Karen and Kristine, I love being the enabler! Unfortunately, I’m easily enabled, too, hence the ever burgeoning rose garden. I can’t believe I didn’t find out about this variety until last week, everything about it is right up my alley, and I thought I already bought all my ‘must haves’. Think of all the fun we’ll have with Rose Rhapsody....we’ll start a thread on it and share pics as our baby Rose Rhapsodies grow up. Perhaps we’ll find folks who already grow it, who will share their pics. OTHERS will become enabled to buy Rose Rhapsody for themselves!

I know it’s a bunch of work, but I actually can’t wait to get started on pruning! We shouldn’t prune until 2nd week of Feb, so I envy your early season, Karen. I’ve re-sharpened my old pruners and bought a few new ones, all ready to go. Yeah, I can only prune with one hand at a time, but collecting multiples of rose related accessories comes with the territory.

I am so anxious to get pruning and weeding

I also want my husband to put up a fence to block out the garbage cans.

It just needs to be one fence section, just enough to block out the car, trailer and yard waste bins

I too am anxious to get out of the starting gate. First, want to weed and top dress with aged horse manure from my barn - got quite a few I want to plant and hoping to get started on all that this week. We get a couple of days without rain - ground is totally saturated, but am not deterred! I bought 3 "body bags" - Compte de Chambourd, Chicago Peace and Fragrant Cloud. Cant stand not to buy a couple when the early roses are displayed. So anxious to start pruning, but will be best by Valentine's Day in my area and do have quite a bit of mulching and weed eating to do, so plenty to stay busy with. And am starting my taxes next week, getting that over with before weather gets nice! Will be able to plan a trip to Tyler after 3rd week of January to pick up my David Austin roses - that will be something to look forward to! So excited to get Dame Judi Dench planted!

I told my husband that if wwe ever move it will be to Tyler Texas, right to the source

KKristine, it sounds like your fence could be for Roses as well as blocking the cans! I think you're very sneaky. :-)

Purchased the Miranda Rose mid-summer 2017; took a chance because no one had watered it (Home Depot) and the manager sold it to me for 75% off. Well, it is the most BEAUTIFUL rose in my garden (have 30 different varieties.) Blooms the longest, most frequent. Beautiful blooms, outstanding color and fragrance. I will buy a few more!

I saw a ton at home depot here today. Here’s mine’s first spring bloom :)

They are at my HD as well.

Thanks for telling me they are back at Home Depot!!! I will check at my local store. Appreciate this so much as I just called a specialty nursery down the road after I wrote my comment and they said they had them as recent as last week but were already sold out.

What a coincidence, I took a photo of my first bloom today, and it was huge and beautiful!

I had no idea that that was such a pretty rose

Bought this Miranda Lambert rose at Walmart year before last and it bloomed beautifully this year. This pic was taken last week before we had some storms blow through. I still have some blooms (faded slightly) but all the leaves are gone and it just looks sad now. Any suggestions?

You got Black Spot, a fungal disease. Which plant zone are you in? If you're in a warm zone , temp is above 80 F, you can't use oil based spray, it would burn leaves.

    https://www.todayshomeowner.com/how-to-control-black-spot-fungus-disease-on-roses/

You could try a sulphur spray, the Cornell mix or Baking soda. Any should help prevent it in the future, but none will get rid of it on the current leaves. There are also other fungicides if you choose to go that route.

Zone 8a in Bullard, TX! Right here near Tyler...the rose capital of the U.S.! I first saw a Miranda Lambert rose at Hughes Nursery . It was in a one gallon pot . I love roses and had seen pictures online so I thought I'd give it a go. There were a couple of blooms on the plant. They were huge and lovely and smelled heavenly! I was smitten! I planted it in a large pot for the year to get it to grow more - it did fine until the humidity picked up and the black spot started on one leaf. Within a week It looked like a leper. I rushed to Lowes to get some treatment and I carefully treated it, even called some specialists across the nation, who told me that this rose is susceptible to black spot....(Oh NO!) Long story short here....the leaves fell off anyway. Then the stems turned black. I'm afraid that this rose is not a good choice for zone 8. Being black spot susceptible makes it hard to grow here in the humidity, if not impossible. It is a sad loss. It is a beautiful rose!

My favorite rose in my garden is a David Austin " Evelyn". This is the rose that provides the perfume for the famous company, Crabtree and Evelyn! In a year with high rainfall it can get some black spot if it does not have adequate air circulation or sun. But it responds to treatment. Because it grows long canes and the roses grow on the ends of these, It is best to tie them up on a trellis. It is a low climber - 6'. This rose is dependable for this zone. Park your nose in Evelyn's bloom and it will be hard to move it away! Evelyn does best in morning sun only. She loves 2T - 1/4 cup of coffee grounds per week depending on her size. This keeps the blooms coming consistently. I have fuschia morning glories and Clematis growing up on the trellis also - they get along really well and create an Eden around the bird bath for the birds! Evelyn is a great rose for this area - but Miranda L. is not. Sadly, I am still mourning the loss of that lovely rose.

I got two containers of ML for Mother’s Day in 2018. I am in zone 6b but our spring and summer can be wet and cloudy here in Pittsburgh. They grew pretty well throughout the summer in 2017 and had some flowers. They died down almost to the ground that winter and almost gave up on them the in 2018 and barely pruned then, yet I got several 5-6 feet tall canes on one with quite a few flowers. The other was ravaged by the rabbit and the deer in 2019. I left the bushes as is over the winter, and the canes are now full of with shoots. I am trying to figure out how and if I should probe them. And if I prune them should I treat those long canes like a climber or cut them down to shorter canes like a bush. - as for the blooms they are gorgeous while they last. They can’t really handle wet weather so they have a meltdown shortly after a shower. Opens hot pink, then fades to a purplish pink magenta.

Wow Maria, Your photos are a reminder of just how beautiful this rose can be! Is your rose on its own root system, or is it grafted onto a root from another rose? If it is grafted and you cut it back to often, it is possible that the roses will change back to whatever rose the root system is. This has happened to me several times, so I don't usually purchase grafted roses anymore. My Miranda was also a graft, but it didn't live long enough here in humid 8a to resort back to anything other than a carrier of black spot! I wish your Miranda a long life! She is a lovely rose!

So last spring, my Miranda Lambert really showed off her blooms. She also lasted a bit longer (4-5 days) before dropping her petals so I think shes a keeper. She blooms often well into November here In Utah.

That’s a good question chande. I don’t think it’s grafted but I have never really looked, I guess I just never recalled seeing a graft looking joint at the base.

Well, you may be one of the lucky ones then! Many of them are grafted. You would easily notice the graft.

So a question to those that have this rose. Are your canes grow 6ft tall with flowers only on the end? Mine has about 5 straight canes and I am starting to wonder if I could train them into main canes for more flowers.

Tique - looks like a keeper to me!!! I love those blooms!!

Evgynia - I'm sorry, I can't help you as I don't grow this rose. Certainly are lovely blooms!!

You could take a stem and bloom to a local nursery for identification or have a rosarian look at it. Photos are difficult to identify sometimes. Miranda is a cross between at least two parent roses, Also you can Google images of Miranda L. roses and look at those photos - it might help. Absolute identification would require DNA analysis.

To locate a rosarian ( rose specialist), contact your local garden club or Google a rosarian in your area.

I’m just following up to see how everyone’s Miranda Lambert rose is doing. I just saw it recently and it really caught my eye.

Mine reacted to a hard prune in January with a great rebound! I count 26 buds!

Carla - 26 buds!!! Oooooh!!! She's going to be a sight to behold!

Carla, thanks for the picture! This inspires me to go out and take a closer look at mine. In Seattle so nowhere close yet to blooming.

    More today!!

Oooooh!!! What a lovely color!! And the pink goes SO well with the apricot!! :) mmmmm :)

Impressive! I lived 20 years in Sacramento, now living in East TX! Miranda did not like the humidity here. She succumbed to uncontrollable black spot and mildew .She is certainly looking beautiful in Sac! The dry air there is likely perfect for her. You have a lot to enjoy on that rose bush! Bravo!

    Oh Cahnde
You are the perfect person to discuss heat with Ben! I envy his beautiful roses, but when I try them here, they look awful. Dry heat vs humid heat, it seems to make a huge difference.
For example, his Rosie the Riveter is one of the most beautiful I've seen, but this year is the best mine has been, and it looks like this:
    Carla in Sac

Carla - not much you can do about it. Not under your control. But, it's disappointing nonetheless.

Can you tell me if this is a sucker on my Miranda Lambert? It is growing from the base of the bud union. Not below it but from the base of the bud union. It's growing straight, tall and thick but the foliage and thorns look identical to the rest of the plant.

Looks like new canes (basal growths) to me! Looks good! :)

    Hard to tell.

I am not sure if this picture shows the size of this rose but it is huge, a true beauty. Mine ended up dying (neglect and terrible well water) and I have not been able to find another one. From April 2020
