Small ogrs

last modified: 9 years ago

http://www.cemeteryrose.org/sites/default/files/article-files/Sales%20list%20for%20website.pdf I am looking for a smaller ogr that would be atleast 3ft or under to replace a underperforming rose in the front of a bed. Is there anything on this list that would work besides petite perle'dor

If you're looking for a small rose from the Sacremento Cemetery rose sale offerings, these would also work:

    "Abbott & Burns"

    'Burgundian Rose' (once-blooming)

'Etoile de Mai' (not 'May' as in the list)

There may be others, but those I know for sure will stay small.

Thanks I planned on abbot and burns, because of the story behind it and wasn't sure it work in that spot since the size description increased since last year from 2ft to 3Ft. might also try to see about ' etoile de mai' just to add a poly to my collection.

Last year, I ordered some roses from Rose Petals Nursery. One is a found Lawrenciana, or mini-China, called Dolly Dudley. I asked Cydney Wade (owner of RPN) about it, and she said it may be the same rose as "Abbot & Burns", found in California. If I didn't already have so many potted roses to sort out, I'd consider finding a way to get one for myself and compare. I also planted 'Burgundian Rose' at the cemetery, so I've read-up on that one. Apparently, there are two forms of it going around, and one gets much taller but maintains the small foliage and blooms. That the catalog describes theirs as staying small leads me to believe they don't have the larger form. And I've been eyeing 'Etoile de Mai' for myself for a while.

Elisabeth's China should fit the bill.

Sweet Chariot, not an OGR (it's a mini) but it has very OGR looking blooms, fragrant & repeats well.

I didn't know Elizabeth's China would work, I read it was kept small at the cemetery but could be a good specimen plant in a garden. I had it on my list already since I saw it last year. I might get a few and have options for that spot. I could always place the other roses elsewhere in my garden

"Elisabeth's China" is best in the Cemetery when it's left alone, and this is the biggest I've seen it there and these headstones are on the small side:

Well, I've never seen it like that, but if it does, I'm a happy person.

OTOH, This rose has had since 1887 to grow humongous roots. I know for sure I'm not going to live long enough to see my two Elisabeth's Chinas reach that proportion.

This is really helpful! Thank you so much everyone. I am curious about smaller roses that will be for sale at the Sacramento cemetery rose sale too. As well as climbers. I have a lot of different roses to research to keep me busy!

Burgundian Rose is a great rose and does sucker but not aggressively. The blooms are beautiful and even after they are gone the foliage is so tiny and beautiful that it is still a very attractive plant.
