It appears you don't have enough lighting in the space. Where are the under cabinets lights? I would keep pendants on over the islands if there was low natural light in the space. Perhaps existing pendants aren't very great. The lack of lighting seems to be a bigger problem than the glossy black counters, which actually reflect quite a bit of light instead of swallowing it.

There is under cabinet lighting in the entire kitchen. pot lights are new LED and I will be replacing the pendants :) Lots to do.
