Most likely genetics. Traits as a result of the parents. Just like humans and much more.

i bought another very pretty phal this january - and it has super close-set flowers, they just jam each other - i don't like it at all. was just wondering if there's anything i can do to space them out a bit - i mean culture-wise?

may be give it less light?

since i don't have lights, my phals are always by the window, as close as possible for more bigger blooms :). and i can curve them too. and/or clip to the stake slowly as they grow.

this particular one spiked as i went away for the holidays for 2 months, so it was unattended and on a wick - so had to be in the best light so as not to rot. That's the first time i did it for orchids. and it grew downwards. the other orchid is fine and has normal spacing.

Next year, just pull the plants back so the spike has to reach. I had a cheap floor lamp, octopus type, and used cfl's in it. Since the bulbs could be raised or lowered, I played around with the spikes, and found I could force the spike beautifully. I did the same with Dend spikes and Oncidium spikes.

It was a way to get through the long, cold winter!

i've seen your lamp set-up - it was very clever :)!

i don't even have space for an octopus lamp. i'm cramped senseless in the 2nd bedroom which serves as a 'plant nursery'/sewing studio/crafts+dressing and is warmest and sunniest room in the apt. have fl to ceiling west window-wall that wraps 2' to north-NW corner glass. and tall shelves against the glass loaded with plants.

couldn't leave orchids still in bloom from dec-jan in florida, so brought them all in - they all produced secondary branches and are blooming still! florida light is just a blockbuster in winter. plants love it, grow double speed!

how do you find growing conditions in FL compared to NY?

we're seriously considering spending even MORE time in south FL ;).
