Ugh, Rats! Mature Meyer Lemon

Well, one day a month or so ago, I looked outside to see something very odd about my Lemon tree. We have had the tree since we moved in, over 20 years. The bark was stripped off on about half of the branches. It happened very suddenly. I have seen roof rats in the yard before, so we set out traps. Over a week or so, we killed 3 of them. But--is my tree going to survive? Is there anything I can do besides a massing pruning (butchering)? Anyone else had this problem? It is rats, right?
