Typically a structural engineer will size these beams for you. In this instance the roof loads being carried by the beam are rather light, so the size is dictated as much by aesthetics as by loads. Steel beams are described by a numbering system that refers to shape, depth of beam, and weight - So a W8X28 will be a Wide Flange I Beam, 8" deep, and 28 lbs per linear foot. All W8X beams will be about 8" deep - their width and thickness of steel will vary with the weight.
