I'm not sure where you read that bermuda was low maintenance. There are two kinds of bermuda. One is common bermuda and the other is hybrid. The hybrid is so different from common I call it a mutant. Common is what you get with seed. They give it lots of different names, and there are some small differences, but they are all common bermuda. The hybrid is not propagated by seed. If you mix the two it will look weedy.

Common bermuda is considered to be a hardy, aggressive, invasive weed by most people not trying to grow it. I consider all bermuda to be high maintenance, because it you want it to look good it needs to be mowed low, twice a week, and fertilized once a month, every month of the growing season. Seeded (common) bermuda is a little higher maintenance because it is always trying to escape and cover any surrounding concrete and gets into flower beds.

The grass you have is St Augustine. St Aug is the dominant grass in our area when you do it right. Yours has not quite come out of dormancy yet and looks like it was not fertilized last fall. Had it been fertilized last fall I would expect it to be a darker green. With St Augustine you mow at the mower's highest setting every week or 2 (or 3), and fertilize 3x per year (Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving). St Aug spreads but not as aggressively as bermuda. When mowed high like I described it will prevent other grasses, including bermuda, from taking hold. It does get some broadleaf weeds which should be sprayed or pulled in April.

I take a low hassle approach to lawn care. With that in mind I would never entertain the idea of bermuda. St Augustine is my go-to grass in Texas.
