"Pretend" dining area

last modified: 9 years ago

This corner is too small to be a real breakfast nook; but I'm trying to make it work.

This is the south end of the 12'x23' living room.

I don't know what living room furniture I'll eventually have ... so I can't choose the LR rug yet ... so I can't coordinate the breakfast nook rug to it. This endless limbo is crushing me.

I picked up this 5'x7' area rug yesterday. It's not my ideal, but it adds a bit of color, texture, and softness to define this little "nook" for now.

It was inexpensive enough that when the LR does come together, I won't mind passing it on.

We can pull the table forward and seat four folks here.

The regular dining table, which can seat six with the leaves, is in the kitchen. It will probably move to the larger sunroom after the long-awaited remodel.

I want to add a valance and/or swags to the window. Should they be vintage ecru lace, or a red/tan/gold material?

What else should I add to this corner? The walls on either side of the window are 19" wide. There's no room for shelves.

What type/finish chairs should I use with this cast iron and brass pedestal table?

I will be adding a 12" deep console type bench to set the plants on. This is the only window in the house that supports plant life.

I think your little space looks delightful.I agree a valance would be great. Go for both the colors in the rug and ecru and switch them up when you decide you need a change. I think curtains and paint are the quickest uplifting cheapest remodel a person can do. I like the rug. Fits perfectly and it does anchor your table. I am sure your plants would like a long bench or shelf set up in front of that window. My house plants are overtaking me. LOL I need to chop some back and NOT keep the starts. Pass them on. Plant exchange here in May.

I like your idea of a different plant stand. I'm not much help with window treatments. all my windows except one have white wooden blinds.

I would get a cute centerpiece for the table. Fresh flowers are always a nice touch too.

Console table for the plants -

Yes, the bar stool has to go. How tall and wide of a console type table should I get. The window is 58" wide. I don't want to install a shelf; the metal reinforced concrete plaster walls are just too hard to attach things too.

A free standing console/sofa table, with four legs, would work best. There is a heat vent under the window.

The table top is 29 and 3/4 inches tall.

    Should the console shelf be...

exactly as tall as the table?

or should it fit under the top of the table?

or should it be a taller than the table?

The bar stool is 12" in diameter; I thought I'd try a 14" wide console. The large shamrock would still fall over into the table's space.

I agree with Murray's Mom, when I decide on the console, I'll pull the table forward into the imaginary hallway. It's wide enough.

    As for the valance...

I have shorter swags and center valance in a cream lace. I can hang them for right now. I found this Devine Sheer lace swag at Country Curtains.

It would have to have the flat valance insert, too.

I love this Waverly pattern, but I would have to purchase the curtain panels and make my own swags from them. That won't happen until next winter. This link is to Etsy; I found the panels less expensive on eBay.

Below is the valance I have on hand. This is the old window, the new one is lower and I have the new wide slatted, mottled blind.

I know "lace" and "valances" and "blinds" and any color except grey is unacceptable in the decorating world, but I love lace curtains, and sheers, and the wonderful light control and privacy my new blinds provide, and my green walls.

I asked DH to refinish the table in a black, or at least very dark brown stain. he decided to refinish it with no stain. Since I keep it covered with a table cloth at all times I don't suppose it matters.

I keep this fitted vinyl tablecloth on the table at all times to protect it from spills. I have several different cloth or lace cloths that place right over this one.

I really like the Devine Sheer swag, but don't think it would go well with your blind. (not sure what your new one looks like) The printed Waverly valance would be very pretty with a sheer under it but you mentioned that privacy is an issue.

ETA: Oh, I see your new blind now. You know what? I kind of like it with no curtain at all.

I think the blind is pretty as blinds go. The color is a mottled water-color blend of cream, tan, a plumish-brown, and sage greens. It's a neutral, but colorful at the same time - if that makes sense. It matches the large verticle blind on the front window.

It's so hard for me to get a good photo. It's not as dark as this photo appears, and looks a bit more green than tan during most of the day.

The blind takes care of all the privacy problems. I love the fact that I can open the slats fully or partially and still see outside. I angle them up or down depending on the sun's position, or raise the entire blind all the way up during the dull winter days.

Do you think the ecru Devine Sheers would be nice, or should I go for color?

I love the Waverly print, too, but I am in love with lace, sheers, and gauzy curtains swirling in the breezes.

I'll confess, I tried to put lace sheers under the blind with a tension rod. I wanted the view from outside to be lacy and lovely. It looked really horrible from both inside and out, so I took them down.

I am also a lace sheers gauzy kind of person. I have a mix in here since I have solid white curtains in the living room I LOVE. I have long lace on the front door I also love but might be changing as these are a bit to long. I have a half light door in the living room. I put lace short valance on it. Should probably do the same long lace curtain as whatever I do the front door in. soon I will be taking down my winter dinning room curtains. I also took down the blinds so deciding if I should add sheers half way up because I have the pretty mosaic windows in the top part of the two dinning room windows.

I like your blinds as the are. I LOVE the lace swags too. Hate to see you poke holes just to see if you like some thing in front of them. I have tacked up fabric using straight pins just to see. Makes tiny holes that can not be seen. Or just straight pin straight down in behind your pretty trim. Just to get the feel of it. Use your old gorgeous curtains. It wold not be quite the same as having them on a rod. would give you an idea though with out ruining your walls or trim.

Now I have all the second rods up for my winter curtains I am even considering adding the sheers behind my solid white for privacy.. They really let the light in and I can see through them from inside but from out side they block the view. They would all have to be shortened if I did this. I HATE sewing on that slippery fabric.

Missed the link to the second floral panel. WOW that is Gorgeous. Not sure if it would go with your blinds. Can you get a sample of it. It would be gorgeous with your walls. It seems like you have your blinds closed or partially closed a lot of the time. so the floral would really have to go with the blinds. And then would you need the panels on the large front window too?

The blind does read as an overall neutral, a "beige with almost green undertones." If I go the Waverly route I'm hoping they will blend. I could get one panel from a seller that offer returns so if it's a no-go I can send it back.

I'm going to Fargo for a just-for-me overnight fun trip next Tuesday thru Wednesday. I have a couple of new resale shops to visit! Who knows what I'll find there.

I have a 3" square sample of the blind's blades. I'll take that along for color matching, just in case!

Would a lighter cream valance over a medium beige-type blind be odd? Do I need more, or less contrast?

I think you would have to tack or even tape up the lighter panels over the blinds to see how it plays out. I have been lucky here in everything is white on white. Well until I got into my winter curtains and then it was all about just being warm.

You really have me considering doing the sewing on those sheers or maybe just buying the shorter versions of the sheers. I think 63 inch would work and have them on the inside of the window frames. Instead of all that sewing. Will see how my finances play out in the next couple of months.

Your just you get away sounds wonderful. I might have to try that. Not sure where I would go. Nothing I really want to shop for. After this brutal winter it would be nice to have just a couple days total R&R. But then I am here by myself all the time anyway. Maybe I need to see different walls. If the weather were better I would go camping and not have any walls. LOL

Forgot I would say the console table should be just at or just below window sill trim. My bottom to the gun cabinet is actually 3 inches higher than the window sills and it is ok but I would prefer it to be the same height. On the other hand the lower window sills give kitties a walk way with out crawling through the plants.

I am an oddball because.I really don't care for most window treatment. Your blinds are pretty and the window has gorgeous wood trim. I like it just the way it is.

That being said, could you place a rod above the window and drape a very long lacy panel over it? Something like this, but in lace?
