I would not paint the walls teal. I would do one or two shades darker than the sofa. Thankfully you do not want gray!

You could then go with a teal rug if you really want that color.

I love your couch too -- 3 seater, button tufting, slight flare to the arms -- it's great! Also agree about skipping the teal wall and keeping the walls more neutral, like grapefruit suggested. Maybe including teal in the texture of the carpet and/or in a textured throw pillow or two would be fun. Pillows could incorporate both the deep teal and the lighter aqua in the fabric of the ottoman..... Not long ago Ikea stocked an aqua velveteen cushion cover which I bought for my couch, so I can tell you firsthand what a hit that has been!! Super comfy, but also a good texture contrast with the couch upholstery.

I actually painted the walls of our living room aqua....in the old house I did one wall that way and it was such a hit that I did the entire living room. It is cool but not cold, and while it isn't neutral, it sort of recedes so it makes for a good backdrop for intricate furnishings or art.

I love the idea of a teal wall. To each her own. It's just paint. If you don't like it, prime and repaint! I would not do a teal rug, however, if it were me. I think a neutral sisal or a softer sisal look alike would marry the styles well. I'd go big with the rug and have all legs on it.

I wouldn't want to say without seeing what the other walls and elements look like.

Just checking - is the sofa and ottoman the same hue basically?

If the grey paint behind it has some green, do you like that? would you like it more if had more of blue-green and bit lighter?

The ottoman has a more blue-grey field and some of the couch's beige-grey spots throughout. This may not be very helpful but it's the only other photo I have of the space right now. It's from the dining room looking in.

As for the grey tones, that is something to look at, as I do think it's a bit more green.

Here is a little mock-up for you. First, a deeper tone on tone turquoise rug. The tone on tone works with the print of your ottoman because the prints are subtle in the rug. Second, a new lamp on the end table that picks up the watery tones with the glass base and shade coordinates with the sofa. Third, replace the purple pillows with light aqua velvet pillows one on each end. Fourth, a tri-pod floor lamp for light in the other corner. Then I would suggest painting with SW Sea Salt. It is a soft green/gray/blue color that changes as the lighting changes and this creates a really nice overall feeling in a room.

Last, I would find a nice woven roman shade in your beige tones for that window. Keeping that simple.

Here is the SW Sea Salt. Can't photo this color because it is so "variable" in different lights. You would have to do a "sample" board and try it in your space. If you do a bright rug as I posted above, then I wouldn't do a "accent" wall. I don't particularly think an accent on that wall with the window would gain you much in this space. But a little hard to tell from this side of the monitor!

I'm liking your idea of a teal accent wall! Then, more of a neutral rug. If you get tired of the wall color, you can paint a new color...and still keep the rug. :) This color is BM: salzburg blue 755

I did some painting for you. To me the teal overpowers the room, almost too bold for the furniture. Also tried a light taupe, a sage, and an aqua. Do any appeal to you?

With your existing pieces, your wood floor and window trim I do think the SW Sea Salt would be a very good choice. Need to do a sample board. SW has some great pre-primed sample boards. You then get the sample size paint, and put two coats on the board leaving a 1" white boarder on 3 sides. Leave the 4th side painted straight through to the edge. This give you a side for comparing to other colors directly. But first, find the rug you love. Because there are a million paint colors and you will want to coordinate the paint with the rug and ottoman, etc.

To me, the sea salt color looks washed out with the sofa.

I think in this room (dark) and with the "grounding" of a deep saturated color rug, this is a good combination. You have to do the sample boards no doubt.

I think a teal wall and a neutral rug would look great. It'd definitely have more pizzaz than a neutral wall. Love Darzy's example!

Here's another one. The wall looks wonderful with the beige sofa and vice versa. If, by any chance, you should you get bored by the colour after a while, it's easy to change. And cheaper than getting a new rug. :)

MarleneM, can you try painting the wall behind sofa darker grey then in the original photos. I think it would work but it has to be clear grey not "muddy "colour. Thank you.

All these photos and tips have been very helpful. I'm only now noticing the grey that we have is just icky and does not uplift the space.

In order to pull off something as dramatic and bold as a teal wall, you would need to have some real decorating ability. And from this picture, I would recommend you not do that. You're better off sticking with neutral colors. You need an area rug, you need throw pillows, you need two end tables, two lamps, and an art piece for over the over the couch.

Cpaul, thanks for the input. Just so you know we just got in the space and have not attempted to decorate yet so it is not a real reflection of our ability. We are planning to purchase the items you listed as we can afford them.

I love some of the suggestions you're getting Kate. I agree that the current paint color is just muddy and doesn't bring any life to your room. I'm looking forward to following along and seeing your progress. Don't forget Target when it comes to lamps and accessories! Beautiful room! As a professional, my advice to you would be to not paint that back wall Teal. I agree with other commentators , it will darken the room too much. Keep it light. I would add a teal colored rug in a solid or tone on tone pattern and add some accent pillows. If you really want to add extra lighting in the room I would suggest doing mirrors on either side of the sofa. Get 2 end tables and 2 lamps , then add some mirrors behind the tables. Kind of like this idea below.

This picture is somewhat of an example just so you can get the idea. Mirrors act as windows, they reflect light and move it around the entire space. In your case, the larger the mirror the better, Floor mirrors would be perfect!

There've been a lot of mixed reviews, but I think I do like the idea of sticking with a teal wall opposed to a teal rug. It's less expensive in that I can use a neutral rug with many more color schemes than I could with teal. The teal rug isn't as reversible to someone on our budget as a teal wall is. I want to show you the photo of the room in sunlight as it might change the idea that it will darken the room.
