Best laid plans... Lighting

Apparently I do not know how to measure. :) With the depth of the medicine cabinet and the height of the medicine cabinet there is only about 9 inches left from the top of the medicine cabinet to the ceiling.

We don't want it to look squished and had to make a quick decision, so we decided to go with a ceiling light instead.

This is the vanity and cabinet (not my bathroom)

So we could do a can or a ceiling light. I think a can would not be enough light. but I have no idea how to pick out a ceiling vanity light. here are two I found so far that would work... what do you think?

I am going to keep looking - but was wondering thoughts on can vs ceiling light?

I love side sconces for grooming is that an option? You could do four if the sinks are far apart from each other or three with a shared sconce between two mirrors and two more one on the left of one sink and one on the right of the other...

I did talk to them about that. there is not enough room on the left side for one. so I would have only been able to do in the middle and that did not seem like enough light.

Oh I feel your pain on trying to find a shallow ceiling light. This one has three lights and might come in a bigger size. It's only 4" from the ceiling.

Did you want to stay more modern like your vanity or more rustic like the floor?

I like that center sconce idea for extra light. Plus, it really looks nice.

I also love that idea, very pretty

alternatively, google "ceiling light" or "flush mount" or "semi flush mount". there's actually much bigger choice now than it was just a couple years ago..

Ballard for example has Moravian star flush mounts..shopcandelabra has some cheaper nice styles as well lately(check their return policies though..not the best as far as I remember) http://www.shopcandelabra.com/lighting/ceiling-flush-mounts/flush-mount?limit=all

(filter by price and size of course..some are ok and cheap enough yet nice.. but some are very expensive)

Shades of Light should have some. I bet other sites too. You can also check Etsy-some shops make new lights and have very good buyers' feedback. Search the same..

needless to say, all these places will carry sconces as well

I think you need more lighting. My master bath has:

    - 2 recessed 4" lights in the shower.

    - 2 recessed 4" light in bathroom

    - 3 linear sconces with 2-lights each mounted on large vanity mirror

    - decorative chandelier

    - fan/light combo in toilet room

All the lights have dimmers on them.

I have added more lights to each bathroom I have remodelled.

I assumed this was just planning for the vanity area? I assumed there would be recessed lights else where in to room as well.

Thank you so much justerrilynn, roarah, aprilneverends and Chispa!

Chispa, I hope all is well with you and yours, we miss you and it is nice to "see" you. :)

Unfortunately because I didn't go with some one more experienced than me some of this is being decided on the fly. :)

Also, In the middle of this bathroom reno due to the leaking shower, we had the wind rip the top of our chimney off AND our well pump went :p so, we will have to wait on a few things a bit.

I was just focusing on the vanity area but appreciate the feedback on the rest!

I don't know what I was thinking when I measured the vanities and medicine cabinets, but they are taller than I expected which led to us agreeing to move the two existing vanity lights to ceiling lights. I have to say, the two lights that were there, with the three bulbs like this each were PLENTY of light by the vanities. Maybe because it is narrow? maybe because right behind the vanities is a bifold closet door that is mirrored? but in the few months we have been living here we never wanted for more light in that area, and in fact, I should be sure to get dimmable lights, as at night, it is extremely bright.

these are the bulbs, I have to admit these new kind I do not understand.

So, after they wired the spots to the ceiling and before they got the cans, I decided I should probably get more like vanity lights you can mount on the ceiling. I don't think DH will want to put a light in the middle. there is only about 7 inches between the vanities I think.

There is one light in the shower. it worked when it was more of a corner shower, but I could see what you were saying Chispa - and that I might want another light in there at some point. I think that would be great. (excuse the mess, they are still working - the rest of the grout went in today and the prepped the walls for painting.

the toilet is between the vanities and the shower and those lights go on together so I think that area will be OK.

It is funny you mention a chandelier Chispa I was looking in here today and thinking it would probably look good to convert the light in the middle of the room to a chandelier.

The other light is over the tub. I will have to think about what can happen with that. but I think the chandelier and tub light will have to wait a bit.

    yep..like the tile:)

(we wanted to put a chandelier over the bathtub but I got that vision it somehow falls on me or DH..:) I'm very masterful in imagining accidents and miseries..)

I think you have plenty of light and it is really looking great! I think you will be so happy with the rectangle shower , it looks so big! Did you go to 3x5 ? I bought cheap fixtures at first for my remodel because my DH was in and out of the hospital during the build and I just could not decide what I wanted. But I had them wire everything for future fixtures but as it turned out I love my temporary choices and have no desire now to upgrade the sconces or chandelier.... As long as it is all wired you can spend less than a couple hundred now and find perfect options later if need be.

I am glad you all think it is looking good! I am really happy with it and I agree that the colors in the tile just really make the trim that the house has look good. they seem to work really well together!

that light looks great nosoccormom, that is the kind of thing I am looking for. Of course the medicine cabinets have doors and it is only 9 inches from the ceiling! UGH. :)

DH is looking at what it would take to install something like this at the moment....

But I have a feeling it is not going to work out so I am going to keep looking!

Oh and I don't know exactly what size the shower is roarah. :) I think it is a bit bigger than I was expecting so I hope it doesnt crowd the toilet too much! but it does seem nice and roomy and I love the Niches and the shelves/grab bars in the corners. It is nice to see it coming together. I only got a chance to try 4 paint samples, but I think white dove matched the tub pretty well so hopefully that will look good today.

Of course I am ready to move on to hanging pictures and trying to figure out what hooks I need, but I think I have to be patient!

a bit too fancy, but I think it will be a good placeholder for the foreseeable future...

Those little spots can be kind of a harsh light and cast weird shadows, and if they are halogen (as opposed to LEDs) they will also get very very hot (we used similar fixtures in my husband's office which is how I know). I probably wouldn't use something like that as your only light near the vanity. I really liked the first fixture you posted way up top with the 6 round bulbs.

That said, we were working with something like 10" between the ceiling and the medicine cabinet doors....it is possible to find normal vanity lighting that fits there. We ended up bringing the light out to the same depth as the medicine cabinet so the lights wouldn't be pointing directly down on top of the cabinet -- I'm sure your contractor could do something similar by building an extension or a light box kind of thing that is the same depth as the cabinet then mounting the vanity lights to it.

Another alternative would be to swap out the medicine cabinet for something that has built in lighting - Ikea has one that I think is really cool. This may not be practical since you already own the cabinet though.

    Ikea Storjorm: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80250066/

Or actually IKEA makes a flat LED light that fits on top of their Godmorgon series cabinets - I can't find a photo of it installed but I saw it in the store and it was really neat (picture a 2" tall square light spanning the top of the medicine cabinet).

What about something like this above each mirror? It's only 5" high and I think it would look great with your tile and vanities.
