Congratulations on your new toy! :) I no longer have a serger (don't sew clothes much any more), but I used to do rolled hems with mine in addition to seams.

Great for rolled edges on baby and kid clothes. Especially for making ruffles. My serger doesn't get much of a work out any more.

I was given a serger by a friend's mother (she had 5, 2 belonged to my friend's grandmother originally and it was decided that stuff needed to be cleaned out and donated - I was one of the lucky beneficiaries of that) since she knew I was interested in learning how to use one, but it's a lot trickier than learning how to sew with a regular machine. I'm mostly self taught, my mom showed me how to thread a machine and sew a straight stitch years ago, I was on my own from there. I wouldn't say that learning by trial and error was an inexpensive method, but eventually I got better at sewing and with increased proficiency it became less and less expensive - being able to get it right with the initial materials purchased instead of say....3-5 purchases later is going to have that effect though.

I picked up a used Juki serger with differential feed and a multi-purpose foot a couple of years ago. I don't 'sew' as much as I patch and hack. I also am practical, so I use the serger to tidy up the edges of frayed towels and such -- even if they are going to be used for cleaning.

i used the rolled hem feature on the edges of dog neckerchiefs. My pup was impressed!

It was a $40 investment and came with a DVD. If and when I sew clothing, I'll likely neaten up the seam edges.

Sergers are a hoot to use -- fast!
