Nope. Never have planted them that late. If they haven't come up this year, I'd dig in the area where they're planted and see if the bulbs are still there. Tulips do not come back reliably here from year to year, although the smaller species tulips often do come back. I did have some tulips come back for about ten years, but it was a case of fewer and fewer of them coming back each year until gradually none came back. I have found daffodils to be a much better investment as they do come back, and multiple and spread.

I find they have to be planted by the end of February to come up in time. And yes, they hate clay soil, and will either rot or just not grow after the first year. I have heard that the Darwin series tulips will last for several years in black/amended clay, but red clay is just too much for them. I've been planning on trying a couple of the Darwin tulips sometime. Daffodils (all kinds) are much more reliable, as Dawn said.

Oh...didn't know tulips were such a mess in Oklahoma :( They are my favorite flower...I originate from Michigan and loved tulips and lilacs we always had but it makes sense because the dirt is black and gorgeous and loose up there! Thanks for the feedback!

A lot of people, businesses, etc, who can and have the desire to will treat tulips as an annual. Dig them up and toss them after one bloom season. Not only could I emotionally not do that, but I don't have the time, nor the money to buy new every year. I do hear good things about the Darwin series, though, that you can get at least a few years, if not more. Google and see what you think. They seem to sell out quickly before planting time, though, so you'll want to place your orders early.

I get it, I love tulips too. My mom has much better loamy soil than I do, and hers last for years.

I also planted (at the correct time) some Parrot tulips in another bed and they are coming up wonderfully. I think the bed I planted the 50 in gets so much water they may have rotted :(

Rotting is pretty common for tulips in clay. I lost a couple of Easter lilies due to it. Orientals are just too finicky for clay soils, but I grow lots of Asiatics easily. They even reproduce.

I love parrot tulips. Some people do grow tulips in big pots, with the tulips in the bottom, then after they've bloomed and the foliage dies down, they plant summer annuals in the top layer. The tulips can stay in the pots during the winter.
