What do you mean by "does this work"? It appears to hold things, be serviceable. It is very dark and I imagine it takes over any room it's in, unless the space is immense...

Is it acting as a wall where you don't have one? What is the rest of the decor in the room? What are you trying to achieve, for those of us who haven't, um, tracked your design process...?

Tinkering does finally get there! I would recommend moving the middle framed piece on the left side to the top shelf - replacing the terra cotta item. Move the brass candle sticks to the middle shelf where you removed the white framed piece. Visually, the two top shelf items seem to conflict with each other.

I've recently begun a huge color scheme shift towards navy and white with a pop of orange. The shelves were just painted yesterday and I've been manically trying to find accessories to lighten it up. (it was terribly dark when it was empty.) my style is eclectic and we have several antiques that we've collected over the years.

Thanks vistas interior design. I tried removing the orange vase, and painting. Now I have to think up something for the middle shelves. Should I stay light, white and creams? A large statement piece?

The major issue I see in your pix is the armoire standing left of it. One big piece in the room is enough, so I'd find another spot in the home for the armoire. As for the decor, heavy looking items like the pot on the right need to be grounded on shelves that don't look like they're going to break under their "weight." I would put that pot above the TV on the substantial looking shelf. Keep other visually heavy items lower in the shelves with lighter ones up above. Otherwise, it always feels like you may experience a crash of the heavy items onto the lighter ones at the bottom. You need more orange sprinkled around the room. Love the saddle and horse pix near the stairs. More of that color in bigger art should replace the big art piece you have now. It is too bland. Once the armoire is removed you'll have a nice bit of wall for a large, high-impact piece in its place. Incorporate touches of orange in your pillows, a throw, photo frames, etc.

Thank you so much. I like the tip about keeping heavier things on the bottom. I hadn't looked at it that way before. About the armoire, unfortunately, there's no where else it will fit. It's very special to us as we shipped it back from Paris early in our marriage.

Hi Brandy. If you're referring to the size, I think it takes away from the space and makes it look much smaller. Also, unless you want the piece to be the center of attention, it can be an eye soar and take away from the other minute details of the interior. I would say if you want it to be the elephant in the room it works just fine, if not, then place it somewhere else away from the center or remove it completely.

I personally love the armoire, but it is a little overwhelming in the room. Would it be an option to paint it white?

Can't paint it... maybe when the chairs are lightened up the room may feel more balanced? It's a work in progress.

Also when I look at the pictures where you can see more of the room I'm a little thrown off. The cabinet itself to me isn't the problem. I like the theme of white navy and orange. But then the wood of the picture frame? Ceiling fan, and the beige creams of the couch seem to be clashing with this theme.

Yes. The soft furnishings will be recovered/replaced eventually. We started with the floors and paint, everything else is a work in progress. The chairs will have blue, white and tan ticking with an off white trim. Fabric comes in in 7 weeks! I'm so excited. The sofa, I'm hoping to live with for a while until our bank account recovers. Lol!. I took down the painting. However much I love it for sentimental reasons, I'm realizing the fact that it doesn't work in the space.

I guess depending how deep it is, it "might" work there (foot of stairs). :-/

Follow your own taste of course... but to me, it looks extremely awkward and out of place where it is now, no offense.
