how or can I root this cutting ...

I have a beautiful older lilac that is rather short (4-5 ft. & has the most beautiful vibrant lilac clusters of flowers every year... not the dull, 'washed-out' lilac colored flowers of so many! I would like to try growing a cutting from this shrub & wondered how to do it? It is in bloom now but could I try cutting off a tip & trying to root it .... or should it be dormant to try this? I have had no luck with trying this with rose cuttings in the past so not sure what I am not doing correctly!
