i wouldnt bother ... unless a soil test indicated something missing from the soil ... though a LITTLE of this of that shouldnt hurt ...

i think i recall they are rather new plantings???

in my cold z5 ... i would wait til months end.. you dont want to have them sprouting early due to such .. and then some late frost or freeze hit them .. i might even wait until near frost free date.. which in my z5 is late may ...

whats your hurry?? .. they are going to leaf out on stored energy.. not what you apply to the cold soil now ...

Good advice Ken. I guess I'm so eager to see growth I was about to jump the gun. Planted these about 4 years ago.

Encourage good growth with consistent, effective mulching. If fertilization still appears warranted apply according to label directions.

Fertilize Serviceberry (Amelanchier) with an organic 5-3-3 granular slow release at 6-8 week intervals from late April - Aug. (zone 5) Use 1 cup for every 1 foot of plant spread for younger shrubs, sprinkle around the drip line and rake in lightly. Older more established shrubs do not need fertilizing as often. Serviceberry prefers 3-4 inches of mulch from the trunk out to a bit past the drip line, pine needles or pine bark work well for that. They flower on new wood so if you want to prune them do it in late winter or very early spring. Yours look very nice by the way....

Thanks Gardenshine I'll use the specific instructions you provided if the soil test warrants it. Good point about the ferts may wash onto the grass etc.
