Worm Problems

I have a three layer worm "condo", with the bottom collecting the tea, the middle containing the castings/compost, and the top has the worms and their food. The problem is that this setup is very new, and I haven't rotated the top and the middle yet, so there is nothing in the middle one. The worms keep on going through the holes in the boxes and getting stuck on the bottom or middle layer. Is there a way that I can stop this? Will it hurt them if it gets too compressed? Can they climb back up through the holes and get food when they need to? when tea starts to collect in the bottom, can they drown in it? Sorry, I know this is a lot, but I want to get this right from the start! Thanks!
