Crown moulding on 8' ceilings is fine, just needs to be proportionate to the wall. We recently did 8' ceilings with 3 1/4" crown. Looks great.

Definitely add crown molding. It adds visual interest and helps draw the eyes upwards. You do want to be careful of the size you use since it should be jn proportion to the height of your ceiling. I would recommend the 3 5/8 molding, the standard size you would find at home depot.

I actually have crown molding in living room, but haven't in the basement, so am wondering what that might be like. We have eight foot ceilings and a guest suite down there bath and two bedrooms.
