No corbels with vases! Very dated looking and would not work with your modern firebox...You've already got too many outlines and sections. The box on the very bottom isn't good at all, too small and too near the floor. It needs to be removed. The space on top looks too big or the firebox is way too small. Definitely no additional "decorations". I think the fireplace should be weighted with large molding near the base but it might be too late for that. Are you doing any sort of hearth? That would give it a better proportion. I hope you're planning to paint the entire area in the same color and not do any trim color for all the little boxes.

IF it is not too late, I would remove all of the little trim pieces and cover with cultured stone. Top to bottom with a dry stacked stone.

What's up with that little firebox? What is it? Does it have gas logs or is it just a picture of a fire? I'd get rid of it and just use the stacked stone area as a TV holder. You could even add doors over the opening in your original paint color. Be sure the area is big enough to house all the Wii or Xbox, cable box and dvd players to get them out of sight.

The firebox is gas and contemporary style as seen in many Houzz photos - we didn't want the traditional huge, brick firebox. Also, we have an electronics closet, so no accessories will be visible. The ideas of the stacked stone is perfect.

I'd not bring anything forward of the wood trim.... as there is no stone/tile hearth

no no ......not stacked stone , if you are thinking of the fake dry stack......this is far too clean for that

One note, the firebox is 48 x 14 - not evident in the picture.

I would first suggest slowing down and focusing on what you are after here

not all ideas are good ideas for this place though they may work in some places

No, not country, more on a traditional scale. I am looking to create something sleak, but lost for ideas.

Actually, we didn't create it. When we visited the house yesterday, the builder had already done the fireplace. It is not too late to change it.

The room is 27 by 15 and has 3 large windows (6 x 8) to the right of the fireplace. The ceilings are 11 feet high.

Gary- in all due respect- you have not offered one solution- just neigh say! The stacked dry ledgestone offers a modern sleek look for pity sake!!

I would add some pix of your favorite rooms to this thread - inspiration rooms. Then, designers and others can help more. Did your builder have this design in another house and did you like it? If so, how was the room decorated? Maybe the builder had an idea about how this design works in the room. Personally, if I was at this early stage, I would hire a designer immediately. So many mistakes can be made without one that are more expensive to correct later. You are lucky to be able to start fresh (I'm envious!). Take advantage of that. I've seen some great designer input on here but you need the fully Monty designer. Some will design your room remotely. Look on houzz for designer input you like or love. Hire someone.

I suggest something like this pix. I can't tell whether or not the wood is something worth putting a clear finish on or not. Remove all the picture framing and outline the firebox to make it bigger and more important looking and give it a mantel feel. Then add a hearth. Just build it out some as it is just too flat.

i have made non tangible suggestions, this seems to be a lovely space and from some of the suggestions I can see it ending up being every busy and having a 2003 Home Depoe appearance. I would never use glass tile on a fireplace with Engish Style trim patterns.... to decoratorie for my taste ...... focus on the room and the overall creator you want before adding anything......

the trim is nice and well done, I would take it off if you want an less traditional f/p shaft

the molding is typical of what one would use in an 18th century style room

Aghogan, if you really like it just leave it. If you like stacked stone, go with stacked stone. Keep in mind what the look is that you're going for and what you'll feel comfortable with.
Don't even think about decorations before It is painted, the floors are down and the furniture is in. And then you can see what's needed. Very often less is more.

The only thing that bugs me a bit about this fireplace is the molding at the bottom. I'm wondering if it would be nicer if that is as wide as the hearth with surround in stead of the width of the TV-gap?
