Cutting ID

last modified: 9 years ago

I was just given a swag of Hoya cuttings by a very generous orchid grower. I do not know what this one is. It has huge leathery leaves. No idea what the flowers look like.

Hopefully I can root it in water indoors over the cool months.

Looks like what is called Meliflua by Collectors Corner but is probably meliflua ssp. fraterna which is now called treubiana vs meliflua according to the thread a little lower down the page :D

You have some flowery goodness going on there in the last pic!

Not meliflua or treubiana...they don't get red to their leaves, even in high light (they just burn).

Before I even try to ID this one, can you take a close-up pic of a leaf? And, just how thick ARE the leaves? That top pic seems to show some very thick leaves (in the glass), but it could be the camera angle.

cummingiana is stinking the place out

Okay...maybe it IS meliflua or diversifolia or treubiana or excavata (or maybe a hybrid of two of them)?

This one is confusing, lol! I have NEVER had those types get red tinting to their leaves...

I was thinking subcalva, but leaves are too thick. Same with trigonolobus (photo of my trig, so you can see why I kinda thought, maybe...) :

I don't think it could be archie, onychoides, or macgillivrayi, either, as leaves don't get that thick (at least, for me), and only new leaves have reddish tints.

And, of course, you post pics as I am typing, lol!

New pics rule out subcalva, trig, and archie and her family.

    Those leaves look REALLY familiar!

Asking on Hoya Lovers FB :) (This is REALLY bugging me, lol...I feel like I should know the ID)

They do look really thick! I have no idea if "melifluawhatzit with huge leaves" got red leaves in high light, so I was probably way off in my guess, lol. Adam, you are in Aus, right? I was basing my guess on what turns up here in collections.

What does cummingiana flowers smell like? My plant hasn't done much in the way of growing until recently when I chopped it back to try cuttings. The cuttings took (yay!) and the parent is offended enough to start putting out new branching growth at the chopped end. :D

Cummingiana has a strong scent. Whether or not it is a pleasant scent is debatable. To me it smells like hot margarine on toast mixed with Norfork island pine sap. It's strong and sharp. Definitely piney.

Meliflua is gorgeous. Hopefully the cuttings take!

Its an easy Hoya. Mine was a gift too. That one I grew on a trellis outside and it even survived our only snow in 100 yrs. I lost it when I got sick and couldn't go outside. The neighbor cut down the tree that was shading the side of my house where Meli was. She toasted along with others I grew in the same area.

Tear....lol.....I'm ok now. I have a bunch of new ones and replaced all the ones I lost.

The consensus is treubiana! And, I will agree!
