If this was my fireplace i would just leave it alone.

Decorate the rest of the room first. Then it will be easier to see if it is clashing with your style or can be made to work.

Until recently, people just managed with the fireplace that came with the house. Now it is an expensive design issue - which means every 10 years or so people with be ripping them up and doing something different, usually at great cost.

What about painting the brick and adding a nice mantle? It could work really well depending on what else you do in the space. It looks like you are deciding on paint color, and if you go with any of those colors, painting the brick would be ideal. Observe our design posted below.

To me that fireplace makes no sense there. Often times in older homes the majority of remodeling is just fixing the weird-ness from a previous time, and that fireplace would fall into that category. It looks weird there, it serves no purpose, you don't use it, it doesn't match anything else in the house. You need to get rid of it.
