Air layer question

I just bought this fig labeled King, it has 3 long trunks about 4-6' long but with no leaves on the lower half. I was thinking I could do a air layer on top of each trunk about 12" from the top which would give me 3 new plants and would force start the lower branching of this fig to come out which I would want.

Is this correct? or do you need to have leave below the air layer to the pot? Since I don't have any leaves below the air layer location should I cut a 1" around the trunk where the air layer goes or just put the soil over the bark? Also when should I transplant it to the ground, it's pretty root bound now. Thanks.
