Have you ever...

... started a whole flower bed with one particular rose in mind and sort of added others from there? I have one more quadrant in a semi-formal rose garden that needs filling and the object of my desire (make that obsession) is Sugar Moon. I saw her potted at a rose sale at the Missouri Botanical garden. Those flowers, and that fragrance were stunning. She was sold, or I would have taken her home with me. I actually tried to bribe the seller with a higher price for her, but alas, she had higher moral standards than me. What can I say, I am weak when it comes to roses...lol

Anyways, Sugar Moon will def be in that bed, probably three or five plants. Towards the back I think Karl Ploberger with its soft yellow and tall stature will make a good backdrop. What other roses would you add, in groups of three's or even five's (mostly the hybrid teas since they are usually narrow). I am no spray, so BS health is important. And I am BIG on fragrance...

So, please dream with me and help me fill that empty spot in my yard. Thanks a bunch for your ideas and thoughts, this should be a fun exercise...

I have two Sugar Moons. I just love her. I have her in two different beds. In one bed she is between The McCartney Rose, and Outta the Blue. She is very pretty there. I love to make bouquets with her and The McCartney. I love to bring her cut flowers inside, so I decided to get another one. I have her next to an unnamed red one in the other bed. That red one makes a nice bouquet with her as well, but I also have a Legends, and wish I had planted her next to it. Maybe I will get another :)

Oohh Sharon, that Legends is a tempting looking rose, I bet those bouquets with SM look great. I love your suggestions, especially a deep red one, thanks!!

I wonder how Dark Desire would look with SM. It's a little bigger than I had hoped, but the back of the border would be a good spot for it. And a lot of the pictures online show it with occasional white streaks on the outer petals, so that might work.

What about Poseidon? I kind of like the look of it, though I am usually not crazy about that purple/lilac shade...

Or throw caution to the wind and throw in three Julia Child and maybe a stronger orange/peach floribunda like Easy Does It or Easy Elegance rose Sweet Fragrance?

Add a few PJPII? It's very fragrant and blooms are long lasting. Do you want a flat rose garden or a garden with tiers? At the end of next month, JP will mark down their rose trees, you could buy a few and grow them in pots and put the rose trees in your new garden, to add some tiers, or buy a rambler/ climber for the center of the new garden......I bought 9 PJPII rose trees last year, I lost one during the winter. I store my potted rose trees in the garage during the winter months.

when i visited the columbus garden of roses last June, the top three in fragrance health and beauty were SM DD and White Licorice. I have both SM and DD as a result and think they would look super together, although WL and KP would be equally nice. I don't actually have my DD and SM planted near one another; SM is in a small bed with Cl. Viking Queen and Falstaff and next to Heathcliff.

Summer, I LOVE the idea of PJP in the same bed. As for rose trees, I have been toying with the idea after we bought blue glazed large containers at Costco... ohhh that blue glazed container alone in the center of the bed behind the white roses would look great!! I hadn't thought about either a flat rose garden or a tiered on... the bed is backed by a clipped boxwood hedge that's about two and a half feet tall. Taller roses like DD or South Africa can go next to the boxwood hedge and still show up nicely above the boxwood.

Vaporvac, I have DD and White Licorice and they both are fantastic roses for me. I think I plan to add them to this bed as well. Last night I walked past my two year old Beverly and it is loaded with buds. I hadn't thought about it, but with its pink color and white-ish reverse it would work really well with SM. Thanks also for mentioning Heathcliff, I always liked the pictures of the rose and think I will give it a try. Oh man, this is fun to plan, and the rose sales are just starting now..:-)
